Several possible candidates have emerged in the race to beat Sen. Harry Reid after Republican U.S. Rep.Jim Gibbons decided not to run.
The first to enter the fray is Richard Ziser, former chairman of the Coalition for the Protection of Marriage. Ziser's group backed an initiative to prohibit Nevada's constitution from recognizing gay marriages, which voters approved in 2002.
"The timing is right, the issues are right and I really firmly believe that in order for a Republican to beat Harry Reid, we need to have a strong fiscal conservative as well as a conservative in the moral and social issues,"said Ziser, who planned a Wednesday news conference to announce his candidacy.
