Army Times:Rather says memo flap doesn’t change his story
http://www.armytimes.com/story.php?f=1-292925-357972.php
September 16, 2004

By Peter Johnson and Jim Drinkard
USA Today

CBS News anchor Dan Rather on Wednesday strongly defended his “60 Minutes” story critical of President Bush’s military service, saying that his report is true but that legitimate questions have been raised about the authenticity of documents he used to support it.
No one, Rather said repeatedly in an interview, has yet disputed “the heart” of his report. But, he said, a “thick partisan fogging machine seeks to cloud the core truth of our story by raising questions about the messenger, methods and techniques.”
...
He said he expected to take heat on the story from Bush supporters and the right wing, which has long accused him of being liberal and pro-Democrat. Those camps “can’t deny the message so they have to discredit and destroy the messenger,” he said. “Anybody who has been around for a while understands that’s going to happen. It goes with the territory.”

Since the buildup to the war in Iraq, Rather said, the nation’s news media have turned timid. “An awful lot of people in journalism have laid down and said: “I’m not going to ask the tough questions. I’m not going to tell any tough truths’ because when you do that, you’re going to pay too heavy a price, and so a lot of people just walk away.”

Rather said he won’t walk away from this story, and the veteran hurricane reporter said he is “happily” in the eye of this storm. “What kind of journalist would I be, what kind of man would I be, if at the first sign of pressure I backed down?”

---------------------------------------
My comments: well balanced presentation of the salient facts as they are known today or as Ms. Knox says in the article “It’s plain and simple. Bush didn’t think he had to go by the rules that others did,” Knox said.

Nice to see this coverage in Army Times

7. They will start attacking Viacom next
When people get angry, they stop thinking. Some Corporate heads will give the green light, the stuff will hit the fan and it will be on
(Just my wishfull hopes, but could you imagine what kind of information outlet Blockbuster is)

The vote paves the way for Viacom to retain ownership of both CBS and the struggling UPN network. 12. What? Being a dishonest, transparently biased mouthpiece?
I don't see him as doing anyother other than that. His job is to look good on camera and not make any mistakes. At this point, he's not doing his job.

15. You don't have all the facts so saying what you did
makes you look foolish. Even more dishonest, tarnsparently bias than you claim Rather looks.

Bad effort. Try again, maybe when you know more facts.

2. Dan Rather is very brave
He's demonstrated his courage for years, and the right-wing won't easily stop him. They've tried it before. I, who not watched evening news in years, have started watching CBS Evening News, and I've also written a letter of praise to CBS. The right-wing has its disingenuous allies on Faux, who don't investigate, simply rely on right-wing blogs and Republican press releases, but moderates and progressives still have CBS. CBS news and 60 Minutes are by far the best shows of their type, and any fair-minded American should show their support for those shows.

6. the Army Times have been one of the few truly "fair and balanced" media
especially on this issue. i think they also helped ted koppel gather names for his memorial special where he read the names of those killed in iraq.

8. There's one way to prove the documents are false Mr. Bush.
Produce a full and complete copy of your service record. And don't forget to explain why you never took your flight physical or reported for duty when you were required to. Until then the CBS documents and the smattering of service records you have produced are all we have to go on.

9. Can somebody clarify for me?
I haven't seen the reports on "60 Minutes," and I keep hearing on the one hand that Rather relied on sources (possibly Bill Burkett) and on the other hand that these were documents released by the White House.

Which is it?

13. The other sensational talk radio heads should follow his example
of what integrity and honor are like. Another American Hero stands up for the truth. The networks that are claiming forgery are digging a very deep hole for themselves, the documents are authentic!

14. It's good enough for me this story is being aired in Army Times
It's hot enough to have stirred up some of the bottom feeders we don't usually see around here unless the right side is taking some hard hits.

They must fear for their hoped-for fascist heaven-on-earth.

Good enough!
