Group With KKK Ties To Set Up Booth At State Fair
Group With KKK Ties To Set Up Booth At State Fair

The Mississippi State Fair opens in two weeks, but it's already losing money.

A group with ties to the Ku Klux Klan, called the Nationalist Movement, is planning to set up an information booth at the fair -- a plan that's driving away some businesses and customers.

The group's leader, Richard Barrett, calls it a "pro-majority" group. The Anti-Defamation League calls it white supremacist.

3. I interviewed Barrett when I was working on my MA
He's a strange fellow. Claims that he's a strict constitutionalist.

6. He wants to repeal the anti-slavery amendment.
I have studied the "nationalists." They made a strategic decision to "Americanize" their national socialism, but they are indeed nazis of the most reactionary type--strictly Hitlerian.

Citizens For Legitimate Government referred to the 'Republican National Convention' as the 'Repugnant Nazi Carnival.' :)

9. So? 1st Amedment.
It's a STATE fair.

It's underwritten by the State, and paid for, in part, tax dollars.

To allow the State to decide that one group's message can be presented there, and another's can't, would be to allow the State to decide what political messages are "legitimate" and which are not, and that is far worse than anything the Klan can do.

To prevent the Klan from opening a booth is no better than the Federal government taking away transportation subsidies from subway systems that accept ads for drug legalization -- which the courts recently struck down.

And if the Klan's message is called "illegitimate" political speech today, how long until the State calls the ACLU or the Democratic Party "illegitimate"?

The neonazis love violence, but only when the odds in their favor. That's something to consider should you ever want to show a nazi how you truly feel.

13. Yes this Barrett guy is pretty wierd
Tavis Smilley interviewed him a couple of days ago. The guy sounded like Limbaugh, a verbal bully. As always, Tavis handled him well & showed him for what he his.... Too bad about the racial climate in Mississippi though. Guess that's why it's a red state.

14. So, the KKK has turned into the CCC and joined the Imperial Party
Murderous fantasies and commentary that was once the purview of Ultra-Right-Wing Nationalists such as the KKK and Nazis are repeated (minus the OVERT racism) daily on CNN and Faux as the God's Honest Truth.

I am actually somewhat surprised that these people aren't coming out more prominently, but most of them are still busy with the Bush "Campaign"

and other businesses are pulling out because of the KKK presence. That would never have happened when I lived there (45 years ago).

24. I haven't heard about these in other southern states, but
the KKK is very much alive and well in the south at least! When I worked in a suburb of Greenville SC, the KKK had several big rallys on weekends, and didn't even bother to hide who they were. They advertised the rallys as KKK. I don't hear much about them here in Ga., but the rebirth of the KKK many years ago was in Stone Mountain Ga, which is about 25 miles from me. They are quite proud to advertise that little tidbit, so I'm sure they're still active here too!
