State fires election records chief over alleged backdating
Wednesday, August 27, 2003

Associated Press

TALLAHASSEE — The state's elections records chief was fired Monday after officials discovered evidence that she changed the dates on late-filed campaign finance reports in the 2002 election to make it look like they had been submitted on time.

Bureau of Elections Records head Connie Evans was fired after the alleged misconduct was found in an internal review, according to a release late Monday from Secretary of State Glenda Hood's office. It was unclear how many or which candidates were involved. Candidates are fined every day the records are late.

"It is unfortunate that this action had to be taken however, make no mistake that any infraction against the integrity and intent of Florida's election law will not be tolerated," Hood said in a statement. snip>

during that period of time?

IIRC there were airport closings or a FedEx plane had a wreck and all the documents were destroyed in a fire?

Anyone else have that memory?

Accident snags candidate qualifying on final day
By Bill Cotterell and Rachel Sams

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - A FedEx jet crashed and burned during a
landing in Tallahassee before dawn Friday, closing the city's airport for several hours.

The crash threw a wrinkle into the start of Florida's political season on the last day of candidate qualifying. The Division of Elections said it was legally powerless to extend the noon deadline for candidates who were unable to get into the capital, or whose qualifying papers might have gone up in smoke on the wreckage of the FedEx jet. Qualifying closed at noon, as scheduled.

However, at the request of Secretary of State Katherine Harris, the state's top elections official, Gov. Jeb Bush declared a state of emergency early Friday afternoon and extended the qualifying deadline to 5 p.m. Saturday for candidates who could prove the crash impaired their ability to qualify on time.

4. You also forgot to mention....

that Cruella Harrison conveniently moved her office, and some how forgot to notify candidates of the new address, just days before the filing deadline. Timing is everything. But you can bet that all the Repub candidates had the new address in advance!
