WASHINGTON - House ethics committee leaders, answering critics who questioned whether the panel's Republicans could impartially investigate their majority leader, Tom DeLay, said Friday the committee will make decisions "regardless of any political affiliations or personal relationships."
The statement by Chairman Joel Hefley, R-Colo., and senior Democrat Alan Mollohan of West Virginia was unusual, in that most of their statements announce a committee action.
Hefley and Mollohan have placed allegations that DeLay misused his office before the full, 10-member committee that is evenly divided by party. The two could have acted on their own to order a full investigation.
The committee has not yet decided whether to dismiss the allegations or appoint an investigative subcommittee to probe some or all of the allegations by freshman Democratic Chris Bell, D-Texas. Bell lost his primary after DeLay, also of Texas, engineered a redistricting plan that changed legislative boundaries.
