Swarms of quakes in Mount St. Helens crater | Seattle P-I
Swarms of quakes in Mount St. Helens crater

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

LONGVIEW, Wash. -- Hundreds of tiny earthquakes have been reported at Mount St. Helens, but it is unlikely they pose any hazard to anyone outside of the volcano's crater, state seismologist Tony Qamar said Friday.

Qamar said the seismology lab at the University of Washington in Seattle is having trouble keeping up with the hundreds of tiny quakes that began Thursday and show no sign of letting up.

"We're having a swarm of very small quakes - hundreds and hundreds - right under the dome inside the crater," Qamar said.

The swarms of quakes could indicate that a small amount of magma is moving into the mountain's crater, cracking the lava dome, he said.

3. Can a volcanist please explain what is happening under the...
...St Helen's dome? Here is a site about Yellowstone seismic events but it talks about "Bible Code predictions" and the like:

16. Magma may be moving
Meaning that an eruption of the dome may be coming soon.

The dome has erupted before, and it's a relatively minor event compared to the 1980 eruption.

The dome is the "small" mound within the crater that has been steadily growing since the 1980 eruption.

20. No need to fret
The mountain already blew its top. It only has a small dome that won't make much ash and its doubtful any would make its way to you. Meanwhile, enjoy the 300 days of sunshine-I reside in the wet side of the state!

5. Holy SH*T!!
Hurricanes, Floods, War, Famine...and now earthquakes and possible volcanic eruptions? (not to mention corrupt world leaders!)

Just had this conversation with a member of the congregation at lunch today. She is convinced that the "signs" of the end are near. This is not a crazy, irrational person. It's just that the veracity of events within a time of national and international crises are making her very much aware of apocalyptic thought.

Sheesh. What do you say when a hurricane turns around and makes a u-turn for a second strike?

"Please, God, give us a sign...should we stay the course, or change our ways??????????"

11. Just pray the astronomers did the math right on that chunk of rock going
by next week. Four lunar distances is close enough, thank you very much.

Don't worry about the end. The end of something is the beginning of something else. The way things are at present, might just be time for a change.

Maybe the Mayans have it right. The world of materialism may well be coming to an end. We have probably put as much strain on this old globe's resources. Time for the world of ether... Made me smile when I read about that. Ether, like maybe the ether of the web?

10. I'm tellin' ya, it's God's wrath!
Florida, umpteen hurricanes in a month....'swarms' of earthquakes....there was even an earthquake in INDIANA recently.
That big Madrid fault that crosses Missouri & Tennessee will let go a huge one one of these days.
Pretty soon: hurricanes in Seattle; earthquakes & volcanic eruptions in Florida.
It's the right wing!
They claimed to speak for God and now he's PISSED!

12. Wow. Something seems to be up.....or down...
1) a hurricane makes a U-turn, like you wrote.
2) In Japan, they had a volcano eruption about 2 weeks ago
3) hurricane Ivan is getting ready to strike Louisiana and Texas.

4) now this?

13. We got ash in 1980.
Lived in Elma, Wa. at the time. At 9AM it was still dark as night. We got a few inches of the stuff. I remember being mad at my mom because she wouldn't let us go out and play. I thought it was just gray snow, she was worried it would make us sick. Pretty surreal in retrospect.

But this little swarms of quakes happen a lot. I wonder why they even get reported.

14. Rainier is a time bomb too...probably not so much a drastic eruption but
enough to melt snow quickly & trigger mudslides (lahars).
