Poll: CBS' memo story an 'honest mistake'
Poll: CBS' memo story an 'honest mistake'
By Peter Johnson, USA TODAY

Most Americans think CBS News anchor Dan Rather made an "honest mistake" in his controversial story on President Bush's military service and should not be fired for it, according to a USA TODAY/CNN/Gallup Poll of 1,006 adults released Monday.

snip........

In the poll, 56% said that Rather and CBS had made an honest mistake — perhaps because of "carelessness in their fact-checking and reporting." Asked if CBS News should fire Rather, 64% said no.

The poll also found 55% of people think they can trust CBS News to report the news accurately; 41% said they can't. Asked about general media accuracy, 52% were positive, 47% negative.

Brent Bozell, founder of the Media Research Center and a frequent critic of Rather, said that neither CBS News nor the media in general should be heartened by the findings.

1. Tell USA Today to mention that the MRC is a conservative hit squad.
Edited on Mon Sep-27-04 09:49 PM by Dickie Flatt
Why does USA Today cite Media Research Center without noting that it's a conservative hit squad created to attack the "liberal" media? Their own website states that they provide the "conservative movement" with with "evidence" to confront the "liberal media." Send a correction notice.

8. Bozell is a wingnut of the first order
Most people, when they see CBS coming out BETTER than the media in general, don't attempt to spin it as "CBS is in trouble and the rest of the media is being punished."

4. More "fair and balanced" reporting by the corporate media
In the last paragraph...

Meanwhile, Doug Forrester, a Republican self-made millionaire, announced a $1 million petition campaign and Web site (Danrathermustgo .com) to get Rather fired. The site reads: "Dan Rather has been caught trying to influence the presidential election."

This is a vanity site with absolutely no content by some stupid ignoramus repuke "business man". Note that they didn't publish a website with a petition to keep Dan Rather on.

5. All that's been established so far is that Burkitt lied about who gave him
the documents. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

10. I would like to ask Doug Forrester, if Rather tried to
Influence the election...WHAT DOES FOX News Networks DO EVERY DAY?!?!
?!! IF the Republicans want to be FAIR...They would DEMAND Fox be Fair and balanced...OR start a $1 million dollar petition that says..."FOX MUST GO."

From Link..

14. The constant right-wing letter/phone call campaign of intimidation...
...alters corporate opinion. It works. In reality, their numbers are puny, but they're organized and loud as hell.

And they're affecting the rest of us. Normal, forgiving, rational people.

16. Perhaps...
...if more of us normal, forgiving people would write CBS and other media outlets in support, we could turn the tide.

I've written in support of Mr. Rather. Have you? If not, do so today! Combined, our voice can drown out the VRWC...
