Honeywell proposes more job cuts (300 jobs)

CHESTERFIELD - For the fifth time in two years, Honeywell Inc. has proposed a downsizing at its Bermuda Hundred plant, which would cut the facility's current work force by 45 percent.

The company said this week that 300 of the 660 positions at the Chesterfield plant could be chopped in coming months. The cuts come for the planned discontinuance of two-step fiber operations at the Chesterfield plant, manufacturing that is done in a more efficient "one-step" process at other Honeywell locations.

In a statement released Thursday, company officials said the downsizing was being discussed with Teamsters Local Union No. 101, which represents 530 hourly employees at the Chesterfield plant. The newspaper was unable to reach a representative from Teamsters Local Union 101 Thursday afternoon.

The Chesterfield plant had a workforce of 1,100 in December 2002, but 130 positions were cut in January 2003, followed by a downsizing five months later that chopped 140 more jobs.

Last October, Honeywell announced plans to cut an additional 120 positions at the facility, followed by the elimination of 100 jobs earlier this year.
