Moore responds to Republicans
Edited on Wed Oct-06-04 07:25 PM by cal04
From correspondents in Lansing, Michigan

MICHAEL Moore shot back at Republicans today after they requested that the filmmaker be prosecuted for offering underwear and food to college students in exchange for their promise to vote.

"It's ironic that Republicans have no problem with allowing assault weapons out on our streets, yet they don't want to put clean underwear in the hands of our slacker youth," Moore said. "The Republicans seem more interested in locking me up for trying to encourage people to participate in our democracy than locking up bin Laden for his attacks on our democracy."

The Michigan Republican Party yesterday asked four county prosecutors to file charges against Moore, citing an election law provision that prohibits a person from contracting with another for something of value in exchange for agreeing to vote.

Moore is touring the country and imploring "slackers" who usually don't vote to head to the polls this year, saying they could make the difference in the presidential race.

1. Figures it's be Michigan. The same ones who wanted to ban flag lowering
when Michigan soldiers are killed in the wars. No shame, they have no shame.

But they don't seem to need underwear so guess they haven't shit their pants yet.

2. Edwards has to be sharp enough to know he's met Cheney before
By not responding at the debate, he was able to respond aftwards, with video evidence. The evidence is all over the web now. It was a stunning rebuke of Cheney's lie.

Cheney got in some zingers, but his huge lie that can be proven false with an image is what people will remember about the debate.

3. Candice Miller can bribe and extort Rep. Smith and they don't say a word
But Michael Moore gives away some Ramen noodles, and the Repukelican attack dogs jump into mode. Why doesn't Republican state Attorney General, Mike Cox file charges? Is there a reason that the Republican Party only asked the County prosecutors to file charges? Doesn't the state have jurisdiction over the Presidential election?

10. As I mentioned in another thread
...Moore exchanged underwear and noodles for a PROMISE. He exchanged a tangible item for an UNSWORN, unenforceable, unverifiable declaration. He did not trade undies or noodles for VOTES.

Had he actually driven the slackers to the polls, stood over them while they voted, and then gave them the underwear, he'd have a problem. As it is, this is just GOP crying, and in classic, tone-deaf, GOP fashion, it is not resonating. There's no outrage, people are laughing about it. It is also bouncing back to give F911 some free publicity as it is released on DVD.

That dog ain't hunting, it's peeing on weecowboy's leg, and he actually thinks it's raining!

The headline should read: Moore cons GOP into advertising DVD release of F911....because that is what they've done. DOH!

Even the GOP base is giggling about the underwear...it's funny as hell!

21. Michigan Election Law
Did some digging and found this:

http://www.michiganlegislature.org/mileg.asp?page=getObject&objName=mcl-168-931

MICHIGAN ELECTION LAW (EXCERPT)

Act 116 of 1954

168.931 Prohibited conduct; violation as misdemeanor; “valuable consideration” defined.
Sec. 931.

(1) A person who violates 1 or more of the following subdivisions is guilty of a misdemeanor:

(a) A person shall not, either directly or indirectly, give, lend, or promise valuable consideration, to or for any person, as an inducement to influence the manner of voting by a person relative to a candidate or ballot question, or as a reward for refraining from voting.

(b) A person shall not, either before, on, or after an election, for the person's own benefit or on behalf of any other person, receive, agree, or contract for valuable consideration for 1 or more of the following:

(i) Voting or agreeing to vote, or inducing or attempting to induce another to vote, at an election.

(ii) Refraining or agreeing to refrain, or inducing or attempting to induce another to refrain, from voting at an election.

(iii) Doing anything prohibited by this act.

(iv) Both distributing absent voter ballot applications to voters and receiving signed applications from voters for delivery to the appropriate clerk or assistant of the clerk. This subparagraph does not apply to an authorized election official.

Not a lawyer, so no idea if it falls under this code.

22. No charges will be filed:
Michael Moore responds to underwear charges by Michigan Republican Party

http://www.freep.com/news/statewire/sw105293_20041006.htm

<snip>

"Meanwhile, Isabella County Prosecutor Larry Burdick on Wednesday denied the state GOP's request to file charges against Moore. The party on Tuesday had asked four county prosecutors to file charges, citing an election law provision that prohibits a person from contracting with another for something of value in exchange for agreeing to vote.

"Although we are a small prosecutor's office, we are extremely busy prosecuting serious criminal activity," Burdick said in a letter addressed to Greg McNeilly, executive director of the state Republican Party. "...I choose to devote our resources to prosecuting those who are delivering cocaine to our young people rather than underwear."

<snip>

"Burdick said he did not intend his letter to be flippant.

"All voters need to consider their responsibility to vote in a thoughtful, reasoned manner," Burdick wrote. "It is my judgment, however ... that if this matter were to be presented to an Isabella County jury, ... they would believe it should be resolved in the 'court of public opinion,' rather than through a criminal proceeding."

a fine filmmaker, and a person of passion who cares about his country.

i avoided seeing the movie in the theaters because moore was preaching to the choir in my case. but watching it in my home just about got to me.

bush needs to be prosecuted, run out of town, and things that if i mention on here men in black suits will show up at my front door.

32. Pappageorge from Oakland County
I think he's term-limited out this year, so he feels free to shoot his mouth off.

For people not from the Detroit area, a statement like his is racially-loaded. Suburban politicians are forever using issues to divide city from suburbs. "Those people in Detroit" is what is said, but we all know what that means when said by a suburban white mayor or politician. Coleman Young used to play the same game in Detroit, pitting black residents against white suburbanites, but those days were a different time. Dennis Archer, when he was mayor, made a lot of changes in city-suburban political relations. The jury is still out on Kwame.

Example-I live in Warren. The City of Detroit water department provides Warren with water services, for a fee. People in Warren think that they are being ripped off and charged higher than people who live in Detroit. I lived in Detroit from 1989-2001. My water bill was higher in Detroit-I didn't have a washer, there, either. I paid a city tax on that bill that I don't pay in Warren, but I use more water in Warren. My bill is about $20 less a quarter than my Detroit bill was. I am forever telling my fellow Warrenites that the politicians are just playing them for fools over this issue, and taking advantage of their "white flight" mentality.

What suburbanites don't understand is that this is how the GOP operates in Michigan. They try to get Detroit suburbanites to fear Detroit and democrats by association, and then the next thing you know, the funding for programs in all three metro counties gets cut and the funding gets increased for programs in West Michigan. Why did Spectrum Health get the contract (under John Engler) for doing all child abuse assessments in western Michigan? The YWCA did them previously. Maybe because Spectrum is owned by (sc)Amway, which of course is owned by the DeVos and VanAndel families? Of course, Betsy DeVos being the head of the Michigan GOP had nothing to do with it.

The insurance companies charge ridiculous amounts for auto insurance in Detroit, and slightly less ridiculous rates in the suburbs. West Michigan gets really low rates, even though car theft is a serious problem in Grand Rapids, Muskegon and Kalamazoo. Suburban Detroiters are relieved they are not paying Detroit rates, instead of looking at how much all of us in Southeastern Michigan are being ripped off. None of them even consider voting for new state supreme court justices. The election is supposedly non-partisan, but the majority(who are all GOP members) constantly rule for insurance companies in court cases. They get elected by playing the tough on crime issue and scaring white people.

Just for the record-I am white female, and I've lived in Michigan since I was 2 years old. I've lived in Temperance, Kentwood, Kalamazoo, Grand Rapids, Chesterfield Township, Detroit and now, Warren. I've also spent a lot of time in Traverse City, because my grandparents live there. My grandparents lived in Detroit until 1978, and I saw what white flight/high crime rates did to the city in the 70s. The entire 12 years I lived in Detroit, I was never once victimized in a crime. I had my wallet stolen out of my backpack in Kalamazoo, I had two bikes stolen in Kentwood and someone put a rock through my car window in Grand Rapids. The few people I know in Detroit who have been mugged were not being smart and careful when it happened to them. It's not their fault, but it wouldn't have happened to them if they had been careful and on one occasion, heeded my advice.
