eBay executive to work with Homeland Security
eBay executive to work with Homeland Security
TED BRIDIS, AP Technology Writer

Wednesday, October 6, 2004

(10-06) 17:03 PDT WASHINGTON (AP) --

Howard Schmidt, a highly regarded technology executive at eBay Inc., who was former special adviser to President Bush for cybersecurity, is returning to work with the Homeland Security Department on efforts to protect the nation's computer networks.

Schmidt, the chief security officer for the San Jose, Calif.-based online auction company, will be named chairman of the U.S. Computer Emergency Response Team, an organization jointly run by the Homeland Security Department and private technology groups, including Carnegie Mellon University. He will work with the technology industry on U.S. cybersecurity policies.

The announcement was expected Monday in San Francisco, according to officials who met Wednesday for a briefing about the announcement with Schmidt and Robert Liscouski, an assistant secretary at the Homeland Security Department. The officials spoke only on condition of anonymity, noting the DHS announcement was next week.

Schmidt, who will be paid through Carnegie Mellon as a government contractor, was expected to remain at eBay. As Bush's former special adviser, Schmidt helped create the administration's "National Strategy to Secure Cyberspace," a set of dozens of recommendations to better protect computer networks.

6. ebay might, but they have a lot of good techies working there!
I think you're being very judgemental when you say, just because he worked for ebay. Have you never worked for a company you disagreed with politically, but you still did a good job? I sure have!

13. I'm also a 'techie'...
and eBay isn't THAT good. It may interest you to note that the good folks at eBay offered to help out John Ashcroft with any personal details of eBay users that he may require. So I don't feel comfortable with an eBay executive joining the government.

And if my company offered to support the neoconservatives like that, I'd quit. If you would keep working for someone like that, then that's your business.

9. "Schmidt formerly was chief security officer at Microsoft Corp...."
That's not exactly reassuring.

snip>
Schmidt formerly was chief security officer at Microsoft Corp. before coming to work for the White House. He succeeded Richard Clarke, a former senior counterterrorism adviser to President Bush who quit and wrote a book containing scathing criticisms of the administration's response to terrorism.

10. shouldn't this guy be appointed to department of treasury?
If i understand the way the economy (according to dick) works properly it seems like an ebay executive would be much more helpful in some sort of economic or treasury position.
