Cuba Activities in Nations Concern U.S.
WASHINGTON - The State Department is accusing Cuba of training Colombian rebels and says it is troubled by a large presence of Cuban personnel in Venezuela, whose president, Hugo Chavez, is a close ally of Cuban President Fidel Castro (news - web sites).

The department's view was outlined in response to a press question Friday about Secretary of State Colin Powell (news - web sites)'s comments in an agency interview that Castro is "causing his own people to suffer greatly" and has become a troublemaker in the neighboring South American countries.

Elaborating Friday night on Powell's remarks, a State Department official said in an authorized comment that the United States continues to be concerned by Cuba's support for terrorist organizations in Colombia.
.......
In an attempt to bolster the Chavez's Venezuelan government, Cuba has dispatched thousands of health care workers, teachers and sports trainers to poor neighborhoods in the country.

'We don't see everything through the lens of Fidel Castro,'' Powell replied according to a transcript of his remarks posted on the department's website. ``Fidel Castro is a problem for the Cuban people. I don't view him as that much of a problem for the rest of the hemisphere. Certainly not the way he was when I was national security advisor -- 15 years ago . . .''

    Flippidy flop?

    8. that was before the debate last night
guess another poor showing requires more saber rattling. Or perhaps this bs is some sort of rhetorical send off for Andres Sargen, who has gone to join his buds Raygun & Nixon in the warm place.

    6. Bush already chose "human trafficing" as the causis belli laugh
We already imposed sanctions. Wait a minute, didn't he impose unilateral sanctions? Didn't Cheney just say on Tues that unilateral sanctions are bad?

    5. They are HELLBENT on invading Cuba and taking out Chavez
For years now, they have accused Castro of developing biological weapons for use against the US (West Nile Disease -- I am not making this up; go google West Nile & Bolton), and more recently of having a sex slave industry.

They're going to make a case that Castro is supporting terror. Boy oh boy -- if they could tie in that pesky Chavez who is sitting on all that purty oil, wouldn't that be another trifecta!

    7. If you think Iraqi resistance is strong, Cuba would be a nightmare
Edited on Sat Oct-09-04 11:41 AM by Mika
Cubans are NEVER going to become slaves to the US again! Never never never!

Any attempt at invading Cuba will result in the shedding of buckets of blood of our men and women in uniform.

There would be NO allies - NONE, for a US military operation in Cuba.

    9. Plus, there enough Cubans in the US do NOT agree with US policy on
Cuba that it would be a real nightmare for the US to invade Cuba.

    10. Very true
Only the stark minority of hard line Miamicuban Batistanos would support an invasion.. as long as the US is doing the heavy lifting.
