Afghan candidates boycott election
(I never am sure what's been posted here already, so sorry if it is a dupe)

from CNN.com international:

Saturday, October 9, 2004 Posted: 1536 GMT (2336 HKT)

KABUL, Afghanistan -- The United Nations, which is helping to oversee the Afghan election, is in crisis talks with the country's presidential candidates to save the historic voting day, the country's first direct democratic election.

Violence that had threatened Saturday's election failed to materialize but balloting was thrown into turmoil when all but two of the candidates laid down charges of voter fraud and vowed to discount any election results. Polls have

since closed.
