A Snub from Spain
October 10, 2004 -- THERE'S a place in the world where French troops soon will be relieving American ones. But it's not Iraq — it's Spain.

French soldiers have been invited to march in tomorrow's annual procession marking Dia de la Hispanidad, which is the Spanish version of Columbus Day. They're replacing U.S. Marines who have been disinvited from participating.

Three years ago, in a gesture of solidarity following the 9/11 terrorist attacks, Spain asked the Marines to take part in this annual celebration. They were invited back in 2002 and 2003. It looked like a new tradition was in the making.

But Spain's prime minister, Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, has put a stop to that. "What does not continue," explained Defense Minister Jose Bono, "is subordination and getting down on our knees on orders from a foreign government."

I know it's early, but your post makes no sense.

P.S. Why do freepers always add, "And I voted for Al Gore." Or, "I'm an independant."

7. Read my post again
Do you know tapas? This is like the US congress spending time to rename French fries because of a "sunb", oh but now it seems France was prepared to send 15,000 troops to Iraq before Bush screwed that up too. What is partisan about me not wanting to boycott foods as if that meant something?

17. Ungrateful? For "allowing" them to risk their lives in Iraq?
The Spanish people were overwhelmingly opposed to going to Iraq, but Aznar decided to send some troops anyway. When Zapatero won, he kept his campaign promise to take them out of Iraq. As for the Spaniards needing us, well, they've dealt with terrorism much more than we have and have made inroads against it in their own country. They don't need our help, especially after our colossal failures in that area.

You voted for Al Gore, did you?

21. The Spanish people were against the war.
They voted their beliefs. The government lying about a terrorist attack didn't help. "Poor Spain"--? They're doing fine. We're the ones in trouble.

The illegal invasion of Iraq has led to an escalation of violence--in Iraq & elsewhere.

22. This Nasty Thing Called Democracy
tends to make governments pay when they go against the will of the people. The Spaniard people never wanted to "support" US in this war in the first place. What is truly sad, is that while Bush says he fights for Democracy, the only friends we're ending up with that are sticking with us are the ones that AREN'T Democracies and torture and kill their own people, like Saudi Arabia, and Pakistan.

27. Wonder how long Rota will last?
We have a very nice deep water/air facility at Rota. It is a key stopover enroute to the ME. I rather doubt that Capodichino and Sigonella in Naples and Sicily respectively can easily take up the slack if we kiss Rota goodbye, this is mainly due to enforced EU air traffic control regulations and even more importantly a shortage of adequate military port facilities in Italy. But we may not have a choice in the matter--it is a Spanish facility, and we are simply guests on a portion of it. We've spent a fortune on refurbishments and new buildings over the last twelve or so years.

The weecowboy fucks us yet again!

29. Bush is the one who wanted to do this unilaterally. He lied to UN.
He lied to everyone. And this is the type of thing that happens when you mislead. Bush is a failure. Bush is the biggest failure ever to "hold" the office of president.
