But soldiers and Marines deployed in the country said the principle of keeping politics out of the barracks generally is being upheld, if for no other reason than "everybody is talking only about how to stay alive today," one soldier said.
If anything, troops said they had too little information about the race .... Many in Iraq don't get to watch much television, and the only newspaper they see regularly is Stars and Stripes. Soldiers said they barely have enough time on the Internet to keep in touch by e-mail with friends and family.
Staff Sgt. Dustin Shepherd, 28, of Ventura, Calif., said he saw a magazine article on Kerry's economic platform but was uncomfortable trusting just one source.
Besides, he said, he and his buddies were not impressed with either candidate.
