Protesters ready for Moore’s UNR visit
Edited on Tue Oct-12-04 04:39 AM by NVwriter
I don't know if you've been following Moore's visits throughout the US but more than one controversy has preceeded them. Yesterday in Utah, Hannity spoke to keep right wingers happy before a visit next week from Moore. He will be in Reno on Wednesday evening and the Bushes and Mrs. Kerry are arriving about the same time. It's been amazing how donors have tried to shut him out of visiting because they don't like him and like Mr. Bush. Nevada is a battle ground state but it feels like we have no rights to free speech anymore.

10/12/2004 01:34 am

Michael Moore speaks Wednesday at the University of Nevada, Reno’s Lawlor Events Center, but protests surrounding the controversial filmmaker’s visit start today. “Moms Against Michael Moore” plans a 12:30 p.m. demonstration outside Lawlor, with the group’s organizer hoping for a turnout of 1,000.

“The president of the university said we should welcome him as a guest,” Dona Lakis, a Reno resident and the protest’s leader, said Monday. “Most of this community doesn’t even want him here.”

Almost 9,000 tickets have been sold for the lecture by Moore, whose “Fahrenheit 9/11” movie is a scathing attack on President Bush. Moore is coming to UNR as part of his 60-city “Slacker Uprising Tour” of college campuses across the country.

UNR President John Lilley has told critics of Moore’s appearance to treat the director as a “guest” who “must be allowed to speak.”

Supposedly Hannity spoke for free, or at least the student union there didn't have to pay for it. This was on all the statewide news and we get it here in northern Nevada.

OREM — Standing center stage, Sean Hannity, clad in a crisply tailored suit, captivated a sold-out crowd with a fiery speech lauding Utah's conservative folks — and denouncing those of a liberal ilk, such as "Fahrenheit 9/11" director Michael Moore.

Sean Hannity rallies support for President Bush at UVSC Monday to offset the coming appearance of Bush critic Michael Moore.

Hannity, the talk-show host who waived a $100,000 speaking fee in order to counter views Moore is expected to dispense at an Oct. 20 speech, said during his visit Monday that Utah students aren't "slackers" — a reference to Moore's "Slacker Uprising Tour," the filmmaker's effort to visit many college campuses before the November elections.
And he doesn't think they need Moore to tell them who to vote for.
"It's not Michael Moore that I'm worried about," Hannity
told the Deseret Morning News before going on stage. "I'm worried about John Kerry getting elected president."

And if Hannity thinks they don't need to be told who to vote for, then why did he go there??? Amazing how devisive this country really is these days.

1. they must be really scared if they have to send Hannity to Utah
Utah is probably Bush's safest state. If Hannity has to show up to counter Moore's show, they must be really, really worried that Moore is having an impact.

Good!

3. The University of Utah is quite liberal
Robert Redford has spoken there as well as the democratic senator...can't recall his name or if he's still senator...

The U of U, which houses a medical school, would love to see Moore. He would pack 'em in.

4. ahh, happy is the researcher who hits bingo . . .

1.) your first newspaper (www.rgj.com RENO GAZETTE-JOURNAL) is owned by Gannett Co., Inc., and on its proffered "about" corporation webpage: http://www.gannett.com/map/gan007.htm
as well as its listed Board of Directors webpage: http://www.gannett.com/map/management/bod.html and its listed w/ wikipedia at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gannett_Company_Incorporated . . .
gives a somewhat accurate overview of what this newspaper and what its contents are all about . . . as opposed to the second newspaper that you listed . . .

2.) your second newspaper ( www.deseretnews.com ) is a Latter Day Saints (LDS, the Mormon Church) "indirectly" owned newspaper . . . http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deseret_Morning_News

As an added note, GWBush "awarded" this country's highest civilian award to the head of the Mormon Church as indicated on this LDS/Mormon "indirectly" owned newspaper website . . . http://deseretnews.com/dn/view/0,1249,595071606,00.html (May we say that GWBush is using this award for political ends? Note what Orrin Hatch (R, Utah) off-handedly states in this article - ouch!)

Why did I do this? To see who owns what newspaper and its contents. Why is the hype swinging so damn rightwing in the Mormon newspaper, while the Reno/Gannett newspaper seems to give a balanced approach to reporting?

My bottomline is -- always know what you're reading BEFORE you make a value judgment/opinion. Biased news is permeating America, unfortunately. To make reasoned opinions and judgments, who wants to rely upon so-called "news" from a biased source?

edited to add: as an after-thought, why doesn't Sean Hannity move to Utah as he suggested? Am sure he'd *feel* more at home there.

5. Hannity $100,000 speech fee?????
Surely there is a sucker born every minute.

No wonder he supports Bush at $100,000 a pop for a talk, he is among those top 2% that benefit under Georgie's tax giveaway.

While the men and woman are dying in Iraq and Afghanistan for mimimum wages wonder what Hannity and his ilk are doing as their fair share to support the troops or this war.

Why is this question not being asked of all of these CON/War Profiteers.......what are they doing personally to fight this war on terrorism.

8. Isn't that considered a political gift. He gave up $100,000.
for Bush*. I would consider that a political donation. Maybe FEC should be notified.

7. I went to Michael Moore's....
"slackers" tour when he was in Nashville this past Saturday evening. He really does a good job and I hope he tells the students there what he said to all of us: If Bush is re-elected THERE WILL BE A DRAFT! I have a lot of respect for Michael Moore.

9. Where have you been? I asked our Union organizer.
"In Reno fulltime", he answered. "Working to get out the Kerry vote." Since Culeeforneeya is Kerry country, several of our Sacramento local UNIONs have our people stationed in Reno doing what must be done.....
