Lieberman returns to Florida for Kerry campaign

WASHINGTON -- Four years after watching the White House slip away in a blur of hanging chads and butterfly ballots, Sen. Joe Lieberman is heading back to Florida for what may be his last campaign appearance there for Democrat John Kerry before Election Day.

"I know in some measure that I symbolize, that I'm a reminder of, the 2000 election," said Lieberman, D-Conn., who was Al Gore's vice presidential running mate in 2000. "The remarkable thing is that this race is looking more and more like a toss up. The president was ahead, now it's a dead heat. And it's looking again like Florida will play a decisive role."

"Inevitably, my mind and heart go back to 2000, with a mixture of pride _ because we came from way behind and ended up doing very well, and also sadness," said Lieberman. "It's a reminder of the unfortunate way it all ended with the five justices on the Supreme Court deciding the election."

Lieberman said his final word of advice to Florida voters will be: "Come out and vote, and then stay there at the end and look at the marks on the ballot and make sure you voted the way you intended to vote."
