Edwards Tells Leno Theory on Bush 'Lump' (in bush's back)

BURBANK, Calif. - John Edwards (news - web sites) has a theory about what was hidden underneath an unusual wrinkle that appeared on the back of President Bush (news - web sites)'s suit jacket during his first debate with John Kerry (news - web sites).

"I think it was his battery," a grinning Edwards told Jay Leno on "The Tonight Show" on Tuesday.

"I think tomorrow, before the debate, John Kerry ought to pat him down," Edwards said, referring to the final Bush-Kerry matchup, scheduled for Wednesday in Arizona.

<snip>

Edwards, who said he jogged about five miles Tuesday, reminded the audience he played football as a student. Bush, he noted, was on a cheering squad.

Bush "was on the side, with his pompoms," the North Carolina senator said. "I don't know, can you run fast with those cheerleading outfits on?"

<snip/more>

"John Kerry is a tough-minded guy. He will keep America safe," Clark said. "When George Bush was a cheerleader, John Kerry was playing hockey."

http://www.sptimes.com/2004/10/12/Decision2004/Retired_Gen_Clark_ral.shtml

the entire article has much more. but this was the cheerleader line. the article says how the crowd loved this line.

49. Removing jackets....
It doesn't even need to be that obvious... Kerry could just take off his jacket and relax, and people would wonder why W doesn't decide to do so. If they put it under his shirt, it will then be more obvious to the cameras that something is hidden there. Unless there's something in the debate rules about taking off their jackets ( which would be damn strange, I think) that would be the end of it.

I can see if it's a comm unit, just in case he's in danger ( and to be truthful, if he is genuinely that well loved by the populace, he wouldn't need that sort of thing, I don't think Clinton did ), and the SS needs to keep in contact with him, but the unwillingness to admit that is the case tends to make the whole thing more suspicious. If they showed it to people so that they understand, then the story about him being wired for the debates wouldn't have taken off.

K.

22. Subtext: Georgie boy is a faggot
What else are we to conclude from the following:

<<Bush "was on the side, with his pompoms," the North Carolina senator said. "I don't know, can you run fast with those cheerleading outfits on?">>

Personally, I don't have any problem smearing Bush. Not after all the crap his campaign has thrown our way. But I wonder what gay DU'ers think about this tactic.

Let's make fun of guys who like effeminate things (which is how most people think of gay men). I am uncomfortable with this characterization, but I don't *think* (hope?) Edwards meant anything truly offensive by it.

I mean, cheerleading is funny period, no matter who's doing it. And it should be made fun of.

I guess I see both sides.

41. It matters when you are a lying hypocrite
When you are a lying hypocrite pretending to be a War Hero, dressing up in a Pilot's Outfit, acting as if you are a Veteran, posing all the time like you're the gun-slinging star of a Clint Eastwood movie, then yes, it matters that you were a cheerleader.

If Kerry had been a cheerleader? Forget about it.

51. That's true. Bush is no more a cowboy than I'm
King Louis XIV. Bush bought his "ranch" in Crawford shortly before he started campaigning before the election in 2000. His "image-gnomes" thought it would be a really good idea to have him be an "ordinary guy" who everybody could relate to.

Drives a dirty truck, goes out with his dog and clears brush. It's all fake. It's just an illusion. Bush only does that when the cameras are there; for a Photo-Op.

The PR people have admitted it; they thought it would be a great image. Certainly a better one that a spoiled little frat boy who just barely squeaked by at Harvard.

43. Agreed about Ah-nuld's attributes.
But the comments imply two things overtly:

1) Girly is a bad thing, because being a girl is a bad thing.

2) Men who behave girly (aka gay men) are a bad thing.

Sometimes I feel like I'm being oversensitive or PC about it, but stuff like this always raises a red flag for me.

86. You've never spent much time in a gay neighborhood
I reckon. I used to live in one. It was a seedy area until the gay guys moved in, then it started getting more upscale. By the time I moved out I couldn't afford to buy there if I wanted to. Anyway, these gay "girlie men" were in incredible shape--they really did look like the Village People, at least in terms of build (some in terms of dress, as well), and I'd bet on them in a fistfight any day. The gay weakling, sissyboy or fattie was really more of an exception rather than a rule. The entire neighborhood looked like an ad for Gold's Gym, with a minority population of dudes who looked exactly like ladies. It was a very safe neighborhood, too--no one wanted to screw with those gym rats, they did neighborhood watch in a big way and would not hesitate to get to hammering on anyone who tried to rob anyone or break in to their apartment.

If Girlie Man = Faggot in GOP speak, well, that's good, because JE's comments, throwing the Ah-nuld expression back at them, will upset the Gay Old Party's homophobic contingent.

My definition of girlie man is best characterized by the 98 pound weakling on the back pages of comic books, who could only be cured by the Charles Atlas method, and never have his girlfriend stolen and sand kicked in his face again. That ad was usually right next to the one for X Ray glasses....

58. Yes, the point was that Bush is a weak mama's boy
and has been his whole life, protected by his family's power and wealthy friends. He always acts without any regard to consequences. The point is that compared with someone truly "strong" like Edwards (or Kerry), he would be shown up. While Edwards used playing football as a metaphor for his strength, Bush could easily be put in the shade by a strong woman. I found the joke very effective and inoffensive.

27. Above there's a picture of Bush dressed as a woman. Big deal, right?
Except that the Republicans are trying to win this election by saying that liberals are all too womanly to lead.

If they're going to run on who'se more masculine, well, that's stupid. But at least let's point out which of the candidates spent their youth dressed as a girl and playing with pom poms and which one actually went out on the playing field and the ice rink and took hits and threw hits.

39. Right on several counts
first, the message was intended to sting Dubya's base who portray him as a mix of John Wayne and Gary Cooper.

Second, as stupid as it is, they are running on the "who is the more manly" platform, and, like everything else they do, they are projecting Dubya's faults onto Kerry.

Third, I didn't take the comments as disrespectful to gays at all. In a way they were putting dubya in the same category of the hypocrits who condemn gays but are really in the closet.

It was tastefully done.

Gays have a sense of humor the same as anyone else, some of the ones I know are wickedly funny.

33. I took no offense

Perhaps the intended subtext was "Georgie is a faggot" but I thought of it as W on the sidelines (again, as in TANG)protecting his ass from getting clobbered on the field---his m.o. apparently.

56. I backed Edwards in the primaries
The only thing I'm sad about is that Edwards isn't at the top of the ticket.

You sound like a frustrated Dean or Kucinich supporter.

68. I'm SO sick of hearing everyone throw that around so casually
It's like how the right calls everyone they don't like a "terrist" and "unpatriotic." You should have to qualify such a statement, especially when that's ALL you're saying. And I seriously doubt that the Freepers are analyzing the complex reactions to a potentially offensive statement. But I hate to think that IF they did, they'd actually do it in a more mature fashion, and statements like this leave me wondering.

76. I don't have a problem with it
Sounds like Edwards was implying that Duhbya is/was effeminate.
Effeminate does not equal gay. Of course, those who don't see a difference between the two might interpret it as anti-gay, I suppose.

Otherwise, IMO, if anyone should/could be offended it would be the folks who (choosing words carefully, but probably not carefully enough) are more attuned than others to perceived anti-feminist remarks.

35. "Dance, Mailman!!!" It's a behavioral control device
And KKKarl has the remote. Why do you think he pops out ot he chair like that? They put in bigger batteries for the second debate, since he did so poorly in the first. Look for him to be packing a couple car batteries in his shorts this time, like when they flew him onto the carrier. They had to keep him from playing with the purty buttons then.

71. What Edwards said was perfect
He didn't come right out and say the President was "wired" or that he was getting advice from his aids, he just said "It was his battery". That's subject to lots of interpretations, none of them good.

88. Whoa...we are bulging with evidence of something!
You are right to ask what that is.

Just which party initiated negotiations so that neither would be photographed from the rear?

I suspect it is a secret service communications device...but that wouldn't prevent it from being misused by the dumbest/worst president the country has ever had.

60. They don't call em the VICE for nothing
Vice President Dick Cheney describes an energy policy meant to "crush the world"

Dick Cheney Interview

MKG: Many critics claim that President Bush and yourself have a conflict of interest over energy due to your oil company backgrounds. Is there any truth to this?

VP: Absolutely not - that's just people talking out of their hat. Just because I made around thirty-six million dollars as the head of an oil company, or just because the Bush family has a history in the oil business, or just because Condoleeza Rice has ties to Exxon and has an oil tanker named after her is no reason to accuse this administration of a conflict of interest. Those are common situations that can describe any average American.

MKG: Right. Do you think it's fair then that your administration is taking the blame for the current situation involving an energy crisis?

VP: First of all, it's not this administration's fault that we are in the situation we are in. It's Bill Clinton's fault, because he didn't have an energy plan in place. Look, just because oil prices skyrocketed the moment that President Bush decided to begin his run for the White House is simply a coincidence. It's not like his father, former president Bush, picked up the phone and called the Saudis to mess with oil prices.

66. It would be far better to see a lot more of Edwards than Cheney
in the next four years. Hope they get a lot of time in the media before the election. There's been a far deeper silence around them than necessary, and it's not just my imagination. I think when the conservative controlled media, which is substantial can't find something to twist and misrepresent about them, they simply ignore them.

Here's a photo of Edwards from the Yahoo article sonicx provided:

Why would McCain even speak to this P.O.S.?

From the article

"When Leno showed a clip of Kerry windsurfing, Edwards said, "If I had to spend 90 minutes on a stage with George Bush (news - web sites), I'd want to clear my head too."

84. MSNBC HAS THIS ON SHORT ROTATION!
They keep showing the Edwards clip, and making snarky comments about Bush's "wardrobe malfunction." They even quoted the master tailor who said "NO WAY" that was just an ill-fitting suit.

Gotta love it...it's about damn time.
