Lethal mystery of Iraq's suicide bombers
Baghdad - A few Iraqis have spotted them speeding towards death before they disintegrate in a bloody fireball. But little is known of Iraq's suicide bombers except that the supply seems endless.

Suicide bombers are the biggest security nightmare in Iraq, terrorising the streets up to three times a week with huge explosions that have killed more than 1 000 people.

---

Suicide bombings were unknown under toppled Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein and there were a few isolated incidents in the war of March-April 2003. The suicide carnage began 14 months ago and now all Iraqis know the bombers can strike at any time.

If there is one place where suicide bombings could have appeal, it is Fallujah, a city west of Baghdad that keeps producing some of Iraq's most determined rebels despite almost daily US air strikes.

2. Editor's Note: Change "despite" to "due to"

3. "...despite almost daily US air strikes."
Stupidest thing I've ever read.

I think "daily air strikes" is the perfect recruiting tool for suicide bombers. An innocent people being destroyed without end? Where is the place for hope?

4. It is kind of a dumb story.
But at least it admits there is a problem, and we have no clue.
The "where do they come from" meme is particularly dufuslike.

5. This is an important story
Edited on Thu Oct-14-04 12:49 PM by NewYorkerfromMass
Tom Friedman brought this up a couple days ago in his op-ed. He asked an important question: 'Why don't they leave suicude notes?' as they do in Palestine.
It is a serious issue which needs to be understood.

....There have been some 125 suicide bomb attacks against U.S. forces in Iraq in the last 16 months, carried out most likely by Sunni Muslims. We need to think about this. There is some kind of suicide-supply chain working in the Muslim world and in Iraq that is able to draw recruits, connect them with bomb makers and deploy them tactically against U.S. and Iraqi targets on an almost daily basis. What is even more unnerving about these suicide bombers is that, unlike the Hamas crew in Israel, who produce videos of themselves, explain their rationale and say goodbye to families, virtually all the bombers in Iraq have blown themselves up without even telling us their names. ...

8. Maybe they don't know that they're "suicide bombers."
Maybe they're more accurately described as "patsy bombers."

7. Maybe they don't have any family left...
After all, this (http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=102x904637) is an almost daily occurence.

Maybe they feel that if we can't figure out why then we're too stupid to even talk with/to/at...

Isn't it amazing that Falluja is both the target of massive retalliation and a major source of suicide bombers? Do you think the MIGHT be a relationship between these two items?

10. and this proves that if they want to get us here in the states, they can
homeland security is a myth of gigantic proportions. The best it is is "homeland harrassment." The DC snipers proved this point. There is no way to stop an organized or even random effort of terror. My take is that the only reason that we have not been struck again is because "they" haven't wanted to strike here yet. They are forcing us to use up our wealth, good will, unity, comfort, and freedom. Why should they strike us now and force us all to come together. There are so many scisims in American society right now it's only a matter of time before we implode.
