African Union sends first soldiers to quell Sudan violence
The African Union says its first contingent of armed peacemakers for the troubled Sudanese region of Darfur will be deployed this weekend.

It says about 4,500 troops will eventually be sent to the area.

The United Nations has described the situation in Darfur as the world's worst humanitarian crisis.

It estimates 1.5 million have been forced to flee their homes by government-backed Arab militias and the World Health Organisation now says 70,000 people have died of disease and malnutrition since March.

The UN Special Envoy to Sudan, Jan Pronk, says he is pleased countries are now thinking seriously about Darfur.

1. Let's hope this works out.
I've been wondering when the AU would start to get some
rubber on the road in Darfur. I wonder if 4500 troops
is enough too, Darfur is a big place.

3. It's about time that somebody did something.
It's nice that they have an AU, that may eventually be able to end the murder. It's too bad that we can't use our own military to help out in a situation like this.
