TRENT, S.D. -- Jennifer Walters and her family were headed to grandmother's house for a holiday dinner in December when they heard the squeal of tires behind them at a rural South Dakota intersection. When she turned, she said, she saw a white Cadillac trying to stop after running a stop sign.

"A split-second difference and the Cadillac would have hit us," Walters, 30, of Trent said recently. "That's how fast the car came through."

Walters, who was riding in a pickup truck with her husband and two sons, said she called Moody County authorities to report the driver and describe the make and color of the car.

Within the hour, she said, a dispatcher called her back to say an officer had stopped the car and identified its driver -- South Dakota Gov. and U.S. Rep.-elect William Janklow.

Over the years, Janklow developed a penchant for speeding and joked about it in one State of the State address and made reference to it in another.

BTW, the article says his mother lives in Flandreau, which he visits frequently. That's where the Santee Sioux have their casino, the Royal River Casino, which I used to go to. I wonder if Janklow suffers from "Bennett's Disease."

I can't believe even he'd dare set foot on a reservation.

of informing a couple from SD that he'd been indicted for 2nd degree manslaughter. I was manning the table for our peace group at the Farmers Market and talking with this couple from SD. She runs a coffee shop there & wanted to make a poster board like ours that lists the name of the dead US soldiers in Iraq. And then I remembered about Janklow's indictment earlier that morning & they had only heard about his misdemeanor indictments. When I confirmed the felony indictment, they were so thrilled.

With this additional piece, hopefully Janklow will be spending the rest of his years behind bars, where he belonged many years ago.
