Cheney firm uses UK to dodge Iran ban

A GIANT oil company once headed by Dick Cheney, the US vice-president, used its British subsidiaries to flout American sanctions against Iran.
A Sunday Times investigation has established that the company, Halliburton, has been supplying Iran with oil drilling equipment through its companies based in Arbroath and Leatherhead.

The exports — estimated to be worth more than £30m a year — have continued despite sanctions introduced by the US government nine years ago barring Americans from trading or “facilitating” business with the Islamic state. The new findings will embarrass Cheney, President George W Bush’s running mate in next month’s elections. Cheney has described Iran as “one of the world’s most dangerous regimes”.

Although he resigned as Halliburton’s chief executive four years ago, Cheney has retained a substantial interest, owning an estimated $18m (£10m) in share options. The company’s trade with Iran is already being investigated by the FBI for a federal grand jury inquiry ordered by the US Justice Department. It is believed that the firm’s managers in Britain could now also face questioning.

3. It never ceases to amaze me that no matter how much dirt comes out
about Cheney and Halliburton dealing with nations upon which we have an embargo or whatever, the dirt never seems to stick. Never. The media continually give the guy a pass. And the republican party, they should be ashamed of themselves. To have such a candidate on the ticket is actually Un-American. His actions, and those of the company of which he was the head, have betrayed the American government time after time. They've been doing this for years. Just because he hasn't been running the place for four years means nothing. Does anyone truly believe that he is isn't making damn sure that they get away with dealing with anyone they want, regardless if it's in the best interests of this country not to do so?

Oh well, as Cyndi Lauper says, 'MONEY CHANGES EVERYTHING'.

4. RW media and Repub Congress keep ignoring the Halliburton scandals
Back in January this year and again this summer Lesley Stahl on 60 minutes exposed Halliburton/Iran dealings and shell Cayman Islands subsidiary and the Senate Democrats held a hearing in the spring about the Iran dealings, Cheney's lie about not getting compensation or having any ongoing ties plus Halliburton's Iraq war profiteering- but media and Repubs keep the story off the front pages.

5. Pork Chop Boy is a treasonous bastard.
"The subsidiary's trade with Iran soared after Cheney took over as chief executive of Halliburton in 1995."

...

"Design is a difficult one," said one senior manager. "We have British designs, but they're based on the American ones. They are redesigned to be British designs."

---------

Sounds like proof to me that they knew they needed to cover their tracks. Ought to be easy to get some jail time out of this.
