Bustamante criticizes actor's link to former Gov. Pete Wilson

Sunday, August 31, 2003 Posted: 6:27 PM EDT (2227 GMT)

LOS ANGELES, California (CNN) -- Actor Arnold Schwarzenegger won't take part in a debate among the leading California recall candidates scheduled to take place this week, a campaign aide said Sunday.

Polls show Schwarzenegger is the leading Republican in the field of 135 candidates vying to replace California Gov. Gray Davis in the October 7 recall.

The state's Democratic chairman accused the action-movie star of "ducking" rival candidates by avoiding the recall campaign's first scheduled debate.

11. It may be better than the alternative...
which would be for Arnold to debate and be seen for the fool that he really is. You know the old saying, better to remain silent and be thought a fool than open your mouth and remove all doubt.

I spoke with my neighbor this afternoon and I asked her who she liked in the recall. "Arnold", she said, with no hesitation.

Now, this is an intelligent, well educated woman. I was blown away.

14. "Intelligent, well-educated"
It may well be that she is both, or one, or neither. But does it matter any more? The futher the nation slides to the right and the less the Democrats offer alternatives to right wing rule, the more people like your neighbor will be left with silly choices. And silly choices they will make, say, from the most photogenic or most action-packed of the corporate chimps on the ballot.

In a word: electoraltainment.

16. Pu..y is the better word to describe Shit-For-Brains #2. Dems. should say
he doesn't have the mental capacity to debate and is NOT debating on the orders of Wilson who knows he will make a fool of himself.

4. Remember George W. tried to avoid debates, too, at first
How long HAS it been since the Republicans had a semi-intelligent candidate for anything?

5. this is bound to attract bad publicity
since the debate itself isn't quite a freak show but one featuring all the "leading" candidates. Arnold is doing himself in.

8. Maybe the mainstream media will wake up and stop the love fest
There are cracks showing already. Maybe this will push someone in the mainstream media into doing some investigative reporting.

9. I've been in LA for 10 days now
His TV ads are completely annoying, to put it mildly. (I keep expecting him to say, "We are California ... and we have ways of making you talk.) I don't know one person here who would vote for him (but I don't hang around with the mouth-breathers, either).

12. It's the smart play.
Hold your base, don't make any mistakes, hope some other Repubs drop out and endorse you, and squeek into office with maybe 40% of the vote. A mistake in a debate could encourage a wavering Repub not to drop out, or awaken doubts about arnold among the party elite.

A simple rule: when you have a stiff for a candidate, acknowledge that fact, and work around it.

13. Maybe the other candidates can "debate" Arnold in absentia?
That is...if the media will even cover the debate WITHOUT him.

Ahnold in attendance. He did so well with Dubya.

17. That's exactly what I was going to suggest
except have the demo run it as an ad with a TV set in place of Arnold and then have a moderator ask them questions. Then quote Arnold from his Jay Leno or any other appearance. And if he has not commented just show no comment from him.

19. Not surprising
To paraphrase Arnold from the Oui interview, some guys are afraid to be verbally naked in front of other candidates. :)
