Registered voter rolls soar 21% in Arizona

Inspired by a close presidential contest, awakened political convictions and the most intensive registration drive in state or national history, 470,000 more Arizonans are eligible to cast ballots on Nov. 2 than could vote in 2000.

Statewide voter rolls increased by 21.6 percent in four years, according to unofficial figures assembled by The Arizona Republic from elections officials in the state's 15 counties.

Democrats and Republicans battled for more than a year to win voters to their side, but in the end, well over half of the new registrants shunned party membership and signed up as independents.

Independents now account for 25 percent of Arizona's voters, up 7 points in four years.

1. This could be big . . . a big surprise indeed
I wonder what was the margin in 2000 for Bush to take Arizona?

4. A lot of Arizonans register Independent
Because we have open primaries for them. I've even considered it myself to help vote extreme right wingers out in primaries.

5. Not clear it's a good thing for Kerry...
Of every 100 voters added to the rolls since the presidential election four years ago, 18 signed up as Democrats, 24 as Republicans, one as a Libertarian, and a whopping 57 as independents.

Also, it notes that there are 140,000 more GoOprs registered than Dems. What we really need I guess is a breakdown of how the independents broke in 2000.

6. Well, I just got a call from the Dem HQs on my side of town and the guy
said there are 18% undecided voters in Arizona! Holy moley! I think that's good for Kerry.

8. I know so little about AZ that I embarrass meself. Well, i do that anyway
But it strikes me that in this economic shithole that we have been in, there has been little ability for sunbirds to retire, cash in their 401s and rest in the sun playing flog.

It seems more likely to me that these new voters are younger, more worried, more attuned to the bull the steams forth from the WH and are trying to do something about it.
If that is the case, then Mr Kerry picks up a number of electors.

10. You could be right, but I happen to know a lot of Snowbirds who are
voting for Kerry, as well!

I don't know how the polls are being put together out here, because the state's very compartmentalized. If you call Northern AZ, you're probably going to get a Bush supporter. Central AZ - Phoenix and surrounding cities, who knows? Scottsdale is Republican country and Maryvale is Democrat country. I think Southern AZ leans a little to the left. So, I don't know how they're doing their polling, but depending on where they call, they numbers would be hugely different.

11. Tons of Democrats register Independent
Unfortunately it had no effect this primary...we have a race of super right-wingers who passed the first test, many of the moderate candidates lost.

Let's hope that Dem turnout can reverse this right-wing trend and send the fundies packing in those races that are contested.

12. One good thing is that those Democrats will not be "erased" from...
the voters lists since they are registered Independents. The Rethugs don't know who they are voting for therefore they won't take their names off the voters lists.
