OPEC asks U.S. to use oil reserves
http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/business/apbiz_story.asp?category=1310&slug=OPEC%20US

JAKARTA, Indonesia -- The Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries has asked the United States to use its strategic petroleum reserves to help reduce oil prices, the cartel's president said Wednesday.

Purnomo Yusgiantoro, who is also Indonesia's mines and energy minister, said OPEC would discuss the issue further with the United States. He didn't say whether the Washington had responded to the request.

"We have asked them (the U.S.) to use their oil reserves to help cool down the prices," Purnomo told reporters.

Purnomo has also asked OPEC members to increase production "to give a signal to the market that we aren't short of supply."

Light, sweet crude for December delivery hit a record high of $55.67 a barrel Monday on the New York Mercantile Exchange on supply concerns ahead of winter in the U.S. and continued healthy oil demand from China.

Opec seeks US help to cool oil

THE head of oil cartel Opec today revealed that he had urged the United States to release crude stocks from its strategic reserve to bring down sky-high oil prices.

'We had communication with them. I asked them to use their reserves,' Purnomo Yusgiantoro said. But analysts said they doubted Washington would comply, with critics certain to claim George Bush was using the emergency stockpile as a campaign ploy, given the Presidential elections are just days away.

Rob Laughlin, analyst at GNI Man Financial, said: 'The US is not going to do it,' adding that the reserve contained crude rather than the refined products that are badly needed and in short supply.

1. Been posting on this for a year. OPEC has no more to give.
They are operating flat out. Field pressures are being damaged and sea water is coming up in extraordinary amounts. Don't have a link, except for people working there. Ask around.

12. we are set to go into a major world depression about energy IMHO
whether it's a few months or a year, I don't know but things are spinning out of control very quickly now. People still want to bury their heads in the sand though on this issue. It is fascinating

6. How long have the Saudis promised increased production?
Five months? Six? Funny how the world didn't rush to lap up the high-sulfur crude their minimal production boost produced in the last six weeks.

And now OPEC tacitly admits that there's nothing they can do. Fascinating.

11. Didn't we ask his dumb ass to do this way back in the day! WTF!!
He was so sure that his Saudi friends were gonna bail his ass out.

Perhaps BushCo is in LIHOP mode and they know there will be an attack or something so we'll need the oil. Well, he'll need the oil to enforce martial law.
