Kerry Cites 'Big Mess, ' Bush Goes Upbeat
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Filed at 8:38 a.m. ET

SIOUX CITY, IOWA (AP) -- Sen. John Kerry says the United States is ``in a bigger mess by the day,'' citing the murky fate of missing explosives in Iraq to sharpen the indictment of his opponent. President Bush has put together an end game that includes persistent appeals for Democratic votes and a rarely used weapon in this bruising campaign -- a positive commercial.

In the mail, on the phone and in courtrooms across the nation, activists, lawyers and partisans of all kinds intensified their efforts to shape the outcome.

With their agendas laid out, Bush and Kerry are going for spirit over substance in the final days, trying to create an aura of excitement in get-out-the-vote rallies and snag the dwindling pool of voters who haven't taken sides.

expect to get any Dem votes when he won't let Dems into his rallies?
Oh, and someone should clue him in that no Dem worthy of the name considers Zell a member of the Democratic Party. He's simply a raving lunatic who has lost his mind and cast his lot with the dark side.

7. And here comes article supporting Kerry's comments re: Tora Bora!!!
Just in the nick of time. This is an article from the Washington Bureau of Knight Ridder, out today, that exposes what really happened in Tora Bora, according to reporters who were there at the time. (Note: I am new here and cannot do a top post. If anyone feels this is newsworthy enough to deserve one, feel free to repost it for me.)

Here are some choice excerpts:
"Knight Ridder reporters Barry Schlachter of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram and Jonathan S. Landay and photographers Carl Juste and Peter Andrew Bosch of The Miami Herald were at Tora Bora during the battle, and photographer David Gilkey of the Detroit Free Press and reporter Drew Brown traveled there a year later, interviewed Afghan fighters, retraced al-Qaida escape routes and talked to Pakistani intelligence officers who were tracking al Qaida.

Their reporting found that Franks and other top officials ignored warnings from their own and allied military and intelligence officers that the combination of precision bombing, special operations forces and Afghan forces that had driven the Taliban from northern Afghanistan might not work in the heartland of the country's dominant Pashtun tribe.

While more than 1,200 U.S. Marines sat at an abandoned air base in the desert 80 miles away, Franks and other commanders relied on three Afghan warlords and a small number of American, British and Australian special forces to stop al-Qaida and Taliban fighters from escaping across the mountains into Pakistan."

8. Too bad they didn't interview
the Special Forces guys from Fort Bragg that were there. Some them have a very interesting story to tell.
