Bush Recuses Self From Election Panel
By GARRETT THEROLF
gtherolf@tampatrib.com

TALLAHASSEE - With the potential for another close presidential election in Florida, Gov. Jeb Bush quietly has recused himself from the state panel responsible for certifying what could be crucial vote totals.

The decision marks a reversal for the governor, who had defied a steady drumbeat of criticism for choosing to keep his seat on the state Elections Canvassing Commission even though his brother, President Bush, is on the ballot.

This month, Bush changed his mind. He sent a brief letter to the state Elections Division on Oct. 15 advising that a replacement would be needed. Florida Agriculture Secretary Charles Bronson, a fellow Republican, will serve on the panel instead.

Bush said he decided to step aside to avoid the appearance of a conflict.

AWOL loser brother.

10. you beat me to it...same as 2000: this absolutely means he intends
to get heavily involved, but has recused himself for appearance sake only.

oy! these guys are so transparent.

11. Yup...I watched the documentary and they are traitors to democracy.
I honestly believe that the whole Bush family should be exiled from America and never allowed in. They are a very dangerous family that has aspirations to become dictators of our country. They can take condisleaza with them. I still want to recall Jeb! He had 4 years to fix the voting machines and he hasn't succeeded. Damn, do those Bushies do anything right other than fund-raise?

2. Let's hope that's not all he'll do to avoid the appearance of a conflict
Same for the Supremes.

Pass www.helpkerrywin.com to other Kerry supporters to get the vote out - we will likely win ONLY if Kerry votes far outnumber Bush votes. Easy quick stuff to do to help, good links re:election and humor at this site, also.

3. Meet the new boss, same as the old boss
I may be going out on a limb here . . . but I have a sneaking suspicion that the person who will replace Jeb on the elections panel will side with the Republicans in any dispute.

4. This will give him more time to work on fixing the election in other ways.
Besides, he will be telling whomever replaces him what to do.

9. There is something that has been missed about /Florida
Edited on Wed Oct-27-04 12:29 PM by Catt03
IF the ballots are not able to be counted fast enough to have an election outcome (and there will be lots of absentee ballots) then the Florida constitution states that the Legislature (remember them; Tom Feeney, etc)who are 80% republican can vote in a set of "new"electors so Florida can cast their votes.

In 2000, the Fl Legislature flat out stated that they would cancel the slate of both Dem and Rep electors and appoint their own to get Bush elected. In fact, Scalia made the statement that was very controversial....'that the legislature elects not the people;\'.

Look for Florida to have an excuse to have the legislature involved.

12. He did the same sort of thing during the 2000 Recount
Just when Florida needed a leader the most to make sure we have a fair election and that all the votes are counted, Jeb suddenly has a conflict of interest. But that didn't stop him from staying in close contact with the Bush campaign, making over 80 phones calls, during the fiasco.

He thinks by doing this he can take the spotlight off of himself and help his brother from behind the scenes to steel the election again. SOB.

13. plausable deniability
he's gotta make it look like he's not thrown the election...
especailly given what he's up to. He knows the same cameras that
filmed "unprecedented" in 2000 will be watching ultra close this
time round... and his hand-picked replacement for katherine harris
the traitor, is but a puppet. How obvious can you get, jeb.
