Would-be voter challengers appeal no-challenge ruling

Potential voter challengers, who could dispute voters' rights to cast ballots at polling places Tuesday, have appealed an Akron federal judge's decision to keep them out of 87 of Ohio's 88 counties.
The appeal was filed in the Akron case shortly after noon today.
Challenger proponents have indicated they will appeal a similar decision by a Cincinnati federal judge to keep Hamilton County challengers out of the polls Tuesday.
An Akron federal judge had ruled that no one will be allowed in polling places Tuesday if their ``sole purpose'' is to challenge the rights of voters.
U.S. District Judge John Adams -- a President Bush appointee -- applied the ruling to all of Ohio except for Hamilton County, saying the challengers would ``likely threaten or impair (voters') constitutional right to vote.''
U.S. District Judge Susan J. Dlott -- a President Clinton appointee -- also has blocked the challengers from being at Hamilton County polling places Tuesday.
