Rock the Vote Irks Republicans
LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - MTV and the nonprofit group Rock the Vote, partners in a massive public awareness campaign to encourage young Americans to participate in today's presidential election, have come under fire from Republicans accusing them of pushing a pro-Democratic agenda and challenging MTV and Rock the Vote's assertions that their get-out-the-vote campaigns are nonpartisan.

The charges stem mainly from a Rock the Vote campaign focused on the issue of a military draft. To get its point across, Rock the Vote sent out 660,000 e-mails in late September with a mock draft card signed by Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld.

"You are hereby ordered for induction into the Armed Forces of the United States, and to report to a polling place near you," read the draft cards.

In addition, Rock the Vote created two public service announcements focused on the issue of the draft and a third celebrity-packed public service announcement (PSA) that referred to the draft as one of many issues young voters might be concerned about. At least one of the draft-themed PSAs ran on MTV for 10 consecutive days in September. Rock the Vote also has devoted a significant amount of content to the issue on its Web site.

59. Students in Mississippi are being turned away, there is
a quagmire going on right there, and Puffy just laid it down, he said "you stand there, and you fight, be non-violent, but stand your ground, because people have died for you to have the right to vote."

Puffy is a saint.

It was very effective. I am on many political lists, and that email was the single most eye catching of the political season.

Rock the Vote talks about the draft because it is an issue young people are interested in. They also talk about student loans and grants. I don't think that is partisan. I think the RNC just objects to young people getting educated and voting their own self interest.

19. Proof neocons and RWers do not like the American democracy.
Wrapping themselves in the flag and using 'do it for the children' as a last resort when they try to get bad legislation passed, what they really stand for is something other than our form of government.

I hope Paleocons manage to take back the GOP from the radical corportists and dominionist fringe. Together we can restore a construtive dialog on important matters for solving the problems the nation faces.

The students of Newt do not love America, they work toward the goal of citizens being kept ignorant and out of the process of government. They do not want young people waking up to the possibilities their participation in government will bring.

Rock on, Rock The Vote!

24. It's amazing that the party that claims to stand for liberty and justice
for all goes out of its way to disrupt democracy. Their version of freedom isn't about civil rights or participation of the masses, it's about their version of freedom which is only valid if it advances their ideology. I have never used profanity in these forums, but fuck 'em all for suppressing voters rights and taking this country halfway back to the stone age.

You are the hope. Traditionally, a lot of you failed to vote, for your own reasons. This time, by all accounts you are turning out in record numbers. Anecdotally, I saw this myself today....lots of young people in a lot of lines. And by all accounts, if it were up to you, Kerry would win by a landslide.

You are the hope. Voting, yourself, is the bare minimum. Don't go alone! Take at least one friend with you.

Bravo, Rock the Vote! Bravo, to all the young people who are not only voting, but working for our democracy; volunteering for the Kerry campaign, the Democratic Party, and/or various groups. I want to see a lot of you run for office yourselves!

You are the hope.

57. Not surprised in the least
Rock the Vote does a very un-Republican thing: It tells people -- especially kids -- that they have a say and have a right to decide issues -- especially those that directly affect them. MTV's campaign has been the most effective strategy I've seen to energize the youth vote. And it has been fair -- Bush and the GOP have had their side presented. MTV can't help it if their platform basically has nothing to offer its audience.

I believe much like the NAACP, the organizers of Rock the Vote are coming under government scrutiny as well.

m.c. at the polls in Mississippi said that "everybody here is just trying to get George Bush out of office" on the air.

Once they came back on he had to reiterate that Rock the Vote is non-partisan and that what the guy in Mississippi said was his own opinion, not the opinion of MTV or Rock the Vote.
