Texas Executes Man on Election Night
http://www.reuters.com/newsArticle.jhtml?type=domesticNews&storyID=6694266

HOUSTON (Reuters) - In the midst of a key national election on Tuesday, Texas, the leading death penalty state, took time out to execute a man for a 1990 murder.

Lorenzo Morris, 52, received a lethal injection shortly after 6 p.m. in the state's 19th execution this year.

He was the 332nd person put to death in Texas since the state resumed capital punishment in 1982

they murdered him?

4. I just can't bring myself to feel sorry for this guy.
<snip>

Morris was condemned for killing Jesse Fields, 70, on Aug. 5, 1990 by slashing his throat and beating him with a hammer after breaking into his Houston home and demanding money.

<snip>

I just don't understand why it took 14 years.

7. Did anybody ask you to feel sorry for him?
I don't want any murder, state sanctioned or otherwise, carried out in my name. I don't lust for the death of a fellow human being no matter what he allegedly did.

Anti death penalty does not equal anti victim.

9. Totally Agree!
If someone commits a crime, how is it logical to punish someone by committing the same crime?

It makes zero sense!

He murdered so Texas shows him what's right...by comitting murder.

That's the kind of logic that turned that State red.

17. I totally disagree....
I support the death penalty.

Executing a murderer is not murder.

Murder = illegal killing.

This man's execution was not illegal.

21. no...
they are still just as dead.

killing and murder are both killings.

One is legal though and the other is not that is the difference.

22. So when they do it, it's bad
and when we do it it's good. I get it.

murder = killing

killing = killing

Murder = bad, killing = good.

23. sometimes.
When a killing is illegal its murder.

When its legal its just a killing.

Do you think killing someone in self defense is "bad."

Killing someone in self defense is not murder, just as killing a murderer as part of our legal system is not murder.

24. Killing someone sitting in a jail cell is not self-defense
Edited on Wed Nov-03-04 04:20 AM by Monica_L
And self-defense is the only legitimate reason to kill someone. And even in that case if you can prevent them from hurting you by not killing them, killing is still wrong.

There's no such thing as "just a killing." Taking life is the most extreme action a person can take, it's barbaric and it's irrevocable and it's just plain false that killing is an appropriate method to mete out justice. It's just and excuse to satisfy a person's basest instinct and has no value whatsoever.

25. I never claimed...
that executing murderers was self defense. It however is legal like killing someone in self defense is.

As for the rest of your post, you are free to your opinion, and I'll leave it at that.

18. not true...
Texas utilized the death penalty in a greater ammount than any other state before Bush became Governor, and it will continue even after he is gone.

There is nothing wrong with killing murderers.

26. I understand
the desire to punish murderers....but do you in your right mind, find the GOVERNMENT caspable of making these decisions? Christ they are lucky to pave a road properly....life and death decisions are probably better left to whatever higher power there might be

29. Death penalty in a nutshell...A woman who rides the bus with me
has a son who WAS on death row. Through her efforts and money she really didn't have she was able to fight for him and get his sentence reduced to life plus 35 years. A very powerful defense attorney told her that if she could come up with $25k as a retainer he could get her kid out of prison. She said this lawyer told her that it was all about making sure the right people were paid.

IT'S ALL ABOUT THE BENJAMINS in the good ole US of A as far as who gets executed for their crimes and who does not.

When I see a BUSH in prison for anything I will then consider our justice system to be fair, until then I must concede it is bias toward the rich and well connected.
