Voters Unhappy About Iraq, Economy; Trust Bush On Terror
WASHINGTON -- In the end voters said their concerns over the fight against terrorism trumped their disappointment with the war in Iraq and the state of the economy.

Exit polls of voters from around the country show that when it comes to protecting the country from terrorists people think President George W. Bush can do a better job than John Kerry.

However, even on the issue of terror, the exit polls show, the nation is divided. According to the results, seven in 10 voters said they were worried about another major attack on U.S. soil. However, a majority felt the nation is safer than it was four years ago.

Those who felt safer strongly favored Bush; leaving Kerry the choice of the 40 percent who felt less safe. (Click here to read the full story on the election.)

11. I'm afraid that America changed in a fundamental way on 9/11
We lost our innate optimism and became a nation dominated by fear. Fear of terrorists, fear of people who aren't like us, fear of risk, fear of change. This was always a country of boundless optimism and self - confidence that could do anything. Go from third rate military power with laughably out - dated equipment to defeat Germany and Japan simultaneously in 4 years? No problem. Put a man on the moon in 8 years? We can do that. Then a scraggly group of 19 guys transformed America in a country afraid.

Rove and Bush exploited this fear and amplified it. Let's not forget that it was only 4 months after 9/11 when Rove told the RNC that the issue in the 2004 election would be terrorism. They stoked the fear with constant bullshit terror warnings and false claims that Bin Laden would get his hands on an atomic bomb any minute and set it off in Denver or San Diego or Atlanta.

One wonders how things would have been different if Al Gore had been in charge. We would still have invaded Afghanistan I think but we certainly would have done it right, with sufficient troops to smash the Taliban for real. We would have done it in a way that made America feel safe and proud of getting the people responsible for the 9/11 attack. A President Gore would have appealed to America's better nature, not our worst fears.

4. propoganda works
the worst terrorist attack in the history of our country happens on this fucks watch, and everyone thinks he's our savior when it comes to terrorism. This just show the power of the media. They created the image by repeating every talking point the pugs gave them.

I want to thank everyone at DU for the last few years I've been coming here. I'm out. I'm through with politics. The pukes own everything, and that includes the media. I feel pretty much hopeless about this country and its future with another four years of Bush. I'll still vote for the Democratic party every election, I'm just gonna stop following and being involved with everyday politics. It sucks being kicked in the balls every day by this country.

That's what Ima waitin for... not hopin for mind you... but waiting for cuz it is inevitable. How could an entire nation, (ok half) follow a pig headed, moronic, irresponsible, deceitful pResident down the garden path like this... amaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaazing. Just because you might have been given the power to do something... doesn't mean that doing it is a good idea.

Imperialism 101
Chapter 1 of Against Empire by Michael Parenti

>>Imperialism has been the most powerful force in world history over the last four or five centuries, carving up whole continents while oppressing indigenous peoples and obliterating entire civilizations. Yet, it is seldom accorded any serious attention by our academics, media commentators, and political leaders.

When not ignored outright, the subject of imperialism has been sanitized, so that empires become "commonwealths," and colonies become "territories" or "dominions" (or, as in the case of Puerto Rico, "commonwealths" too). Imperialist military interventions become matters of "national defense," "national security," and maintaining "stability" in one or another region. In this book I want to look at imperialism for what it really is.<<

14. Probably, why else would the White House have allowed it released?
Edited on Wed Nov-03-04 10:14 AM by Democat
The right wing knows how the game is played. That tape was released to the public right before the election for a reason. Bush's campaign could have delayed it a few days if they thought it would have benefited them.

21. Well wishes for those who voted Shrub..."you reap, what you sow"
To all the dumbass lemmings who voted for Shrub...

I hope your children are drafted and at least one perishes fighting a bullshit imperialistic "new Middle East" war.

I hope Roe vs. Wade is overturned and your teenage daughter becomes pregnant from a rape.

I hope your ailing mother dies prematurely because the family couldn't afford the cost of her drugs and jacked-up treatment costs secondary to insurance rates.

I hope the Patriot Act is further extended such that you are falsely accused of wrongdoing (reading the "wrong" literature at the library) and you disappear from the face of the Earth.

I hope that the Christian Right becomes so powerful that other religions are outlawed or ostrasized from society.

I hope the environment continues to be polluted to a massive degree until food becomes scarce and water is rationed like a commodity.

I hope the fight against terrorism bankrupts our country, causing a second Major Depression.

I hope fuel costs continue to climb, such that your elderly parents can no longer afford Winter heating costs and are found frozen and alone.

...good bye, Amerika. I'm leaving for better locations, where people are "truly free and NOT FUCKING INSANE." Seriously.

29. thanks AWL, that's what we've concluded too
It's the only thing to give us solace. America wants this chickenshit in office, great, they've got it. No more excuses from Bush - he has the Congress, the WH, the judiciary - he is responsible for all the forthcoming failures and problems.

When people are poorer over the next 4 years, when their tax burden becomes unbearable, when we are attacked again by our enemies (more of whom Bush has created), when all our liberties are stripped away, and when our Constititional rights are abridged based on the state in which you live, THERE WILL BE NO ONE ELSE TO BLAME BUT BUSH.

I don't want to hear any complaints from the red welfare states of our nation (remember, the coastal and north east states pay more in federal taxes than they take back, thus making the red states welfare recipients) when the whole country is in the tank and they are personally suffering. They asked for it.

32. Had to vent a little...
It would be a shame for anyone to die as a result of Shrub & the Repukes policies, but I can't say that I'll be blaming Shrub for the problem. If people are too stupid or not willing to understand that Shrub is bordering upon a delusional dictator, then they deserve to be treated like those under a dictator.

I'm just not sticking around to see America go down the shit hole.

When the country that I grew up believing in and trusting begins to morph into a purile theocracy, it's time to write off the loss and get the hell out of town.

EU here I come...preferrably the Netherlands or Belgium, maybe.

38. Ironically, the most likely sites of new terror strikes went for Kerry.
New York, D.C. (including Maryland and the No.Va. suburbs), California, and the most likely Midwestern target city, Chicago.

If those folks feel safe (I live in central PA now), what's the problem with those who are not going to be targeted?

Well, I'll tell you. On 9/11, people here thought that the Pennsylvania statehouse would be targeted. People looked at me funny when I said that I though that was unlikely.

Three Mile Island, perhaps, but that happened a long time ago and it is unclear to me whether the OBL crowd was aware of it.

I guess most of us think that our little world is the center of the universe.

39. Post 9-11 EPA Report
Edited on Wed Nov-03-04 03:19 PM by Hardball
I was amazed at how little play this story got. I remember thinking to myself, "This is Big Stuff" when I read it. The EPA's own scientific data said clouds of asbestos and other toxic elements were in the air after the WTC came down and the air in lower Manhattan was unsafe to breathe. The White House insisted on editing the EPA report to falsely claim the air was safe enough for people to return to their homes and places of work.

Nobody ever asked who, exactly, wanted the report modified. Nobody ever asked who dictated the changes. Nobody ever demanded any explanation at all.

I knew there was big trouble brewing when the truth about this report was exposed and nobody seemed to care.
