Bush Closes in on Win As Kerry Aides Meet
By CALVIN WOODWARD and RON FOURNIER, Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON - President Bush (news - web sites) edged closer to victory Wednesday against Sen. John Kerry (news - web sites) in a roiling contest that came down to a heart-stopper in the heartland, a battle over Ohio. Disheartened Kerry aides met to evaluate his options, with concession the talk of the campaign.

Nothing was settled or conceded in the first light of day, but Kerry faced a daunting task trying to deny Bush an electoral majority that was almost within reach. The Democrat's campaign planned a statement by midday, advisers said.

"We are convinced that President Bush has won re-election," said White House chief of staff Andy Card. But that conviction did not sway Democrats, who insisted Kerry was still in contention for Ohio's decisive cache of 20 electoral votes.

Bush himself planned to declare victory before long. Republican Party Chairman Marc Racicot said the president put it off temporarily as a courtesy to Kerry, "to allow the opportunity to look at the situation in the cold hard light of day."

2. Here's why Kerry should not quit- word from Ohio
almost every voter on line last night when the polls closed got a provisional ballot. I just heard this word of mouth.
Also, provisional ballots were good for any voter not appearing registered for whatever reason, and those votes will count no matter where the vote was cast, so long as that person is properly registered.

Kerry should not quit.

5. Why were they not allowed to vote like everyone else?
That is wrong, wrong, wrong.
Here in Georgia anyone in line at the time the polls closed was allowed to vote (on our fucking electronic no-ballot machines).

7. Because the sheer mass of people waiting required they do so
It was a physical limitation. I don't know the details, just got this word of mouth. This voter was in Columbus, and was on line for 6 hours. The handouts began at 7:30.

9. I don't buy that "physical limitation" argument.
If you are in line you get to vote like everyone else. Period.

4. If Bush declares before Kerry concedes, ...
It said the votes have been counted. Lincoln had carried
the North and won the election. His name was not even on
the ballots in ten southern states, yet Northerners
outnumbered southerners and outvoted them. The South
was very mad about this. Southerners feel that since Lincoln
had been elected they had no say in the national
government. They also believed that the Congress and
the President were against their appeals, one of them is
slavery. Rumors have spread saying that South Carolina
has threatened secede from the Union. If this is the outcome
of this election, something has to be done fast!

"Why am I always being asked to prove these systems
aren't secure? The burden of proof ought to be on the
vendor. You ask about the hardware. 'Secret.' The
software? 'Secret.' What's the cryptography? 'Can't tell
you because that'll compromise the secrecy of the
machines.'... Federal testing procedures? 'Secret'! Results of
the tests? 'Secret'! Basically we are required to have blind
faith."

6. Why does he have to concede at all?
This whole concession routine is such a useless ritual of victory and submission. Gore should have never given that melodramatic concession speech. Neither should Kerry. Be a sore loser. No surrender.

8. I agree completely, don't concede it, if it doesn't go his way
still don't, just as a protest to the BS.

11. The Dems should now realize this is a life/death issue
There is no way Kerry can concede.

Just a casual perusal shows voting
inconsistencies nationwide.
And what's Kerry looking at?

Ohio should be just the beginning.

The USMedia is about to find itself in a bind
as days go by.

Day 1 and no US President.
