Blair and Bush advisers at war

By Joe Murphy Political Editor In Washington, Evening Standard
4 November 2004

George Bush's environmental adviser today launched a savage attack on Britain's chief scientist for suggesting that global warming threatened the planet.

Myron Ebell, director of global warming at the Competitive Enterprise Institute in Washington, said that Sir David King's warnings on climate change were "ridiculous" and "alarmist".

Sir David created controversy earlier this year when he said that global warming was a more important issue than the war on terror. He warned that flooding, droughts and extreme weather were on their way unless urgent action was taken.

But in an interview with BBC Radio 4's Today programme, Mr Ebell said the warning that climate change was the greatest crisis for humanity was based on "a tissue of improbabilities": "We have people who know nothing-about climate science like Sir David King, who are alarmist and continually promote this ridiculous claim," he said.

1. Thom Hartmann has had this Ebell idiot on his show...
and the CEI is very much like the AEI - paid for by the oil and tobacco industries, among others.

I believe he might have been the fool from the CEI who thought it was a good idea if the current stocks of flu vaccine were subject to market forces, so that it might cost 50,000 for a jab. The guy's a dipshit.

2. But I'm sure Mr. Ebell
could tell us all about the "real truth" and the invisible cloud guy.

4. Ebell isn't even a scientist!
A native of Baker City, Oregon, Mr. Ebell holds a BA from Colorado College and an MSc from the London School of Economics. He also did graduate work at the University of California at San Diego and at Peterhouse, Cambridge University

David King ScD, FRS, FRSC, FinstP was appointed as the Government's Chief Scientific Adviser and Head of the Office of Science and Technology in October 2000.
Born in South Africa in 1939, and after an early career at the University of Witwatersrand, Imperial College and the University of East Anglia, he became the Brunner Professor of Physical Chemistry at the University of Liverpool in 1974.

In 1988, he was appointed 1920 Professor of Physical Chemistry at the University of Cambridge and subsequently became Master of Downing College (1995-2000), and Head of the University Chemistry Department (1993-2000). He retains his position at Cambridge as 1920 Professor of Chemistry, where he is still active in research."

So, who do you trust to understand climate science? The head of Chemistry at Cambridge University, or someone from the 'social sciences'?

6. I sneaked a look at the source of one of Skinner's posts
You put (div class="excerpt") and (/div) around the excerpt - using square brackets, of course (I don't know how to get square brackets to display on DU).

Per your question: I checked the box called "message format Check here if you want to format your message in plain text. Use for posting code snippets."

edit: It works in the preview, but not in the post

8. Should be this:

[div class="excerpt"]hello world[/div]

(if I have now worked out how to show square brackets - it looks OK in the preview screen - Famous Last Words ... :-) )

10. Other Ways
You can pretty much do anything by inlining the style information.

For example, this is the same as the excerpt class but with a wider border and different colours

Simply enclose the text in

<div class="excerpt" style="background-color: #fff3ff; border: solid 5px #ccc0cc">

and

</div>

Changing the angle brackets to square brackets as usual. In a nutshell, the "style" information over-rides those settings that are specified in DU's "excerpt" class.

9. stand strong, Mr. King!
It's against my democratic nature to call anyone "Sir David" but he still sounds like a hell of a man who is not going to be told to stand down on the matter of global climate change.

good hearts and who care about society.

Hopefully, one of the legacies of Labour in the UK will be to give "Sir" a whole knew meaning.

But I'm with you. Just call him David. Or, more appropiately, "Professor" or "Doctor".

to the Labour party (or members thereof)?

What a coincidence ...

11. It's a shame that the GOP and neocon hard-on for preemptive action
without needing proof or facts doesn't apply to stopping climate change. Fucking morons.

15. I heard this guy on Today - I was half asleep when I heard him saying
something to the effect of:

Only America has free scientists. In every other country scientists just produce the results their govts. want.

I nearly choked on my early morning phlegm.

I've worked all my working life (well 5 years) in state funded scientific organisations. Most of the senior scientists I have met care not a jot about govt. policy. After all, if they don't produce quality research then it's their reputation that goes down the shitter. If these people were ambitious or wanted money, they would not be working in universities.

When the govt. does come up with stuff it wants us to do, it tends to be new "initiatives".

Flavour of the month just now is "Knowledge Transfer" - no-one seems to know what it means - even people in the funding organisations. But it looks good on proposals.

To sum up: What a twat!
