U.S. closes Syrian embassy
Al JazeerA
11/4/2004 9:13:00 AM GMT

The U.S. has closed its embassy in Damascus on Thursday for security reasons, the mission said in a website statement.

“The embassy will be closed to the public on Thursday, November 4, 2004 to enable it to reassess its security posture,” it said.

An official at the embassy refused to give any further details regarding the reasons of the closure. He said that the embassy will be closed just for one day, although the mission is usually shut on Fridays and Saturdays.

There has been tension between Syria and the United States over the past few months, and the relation between the two countries have long been strained.

That is the most innocent explanation I can think of. They also be bringing in some sort of spy equipment that they don't want any visitors to catch sight of.

38. It's on DVD.
When I was in college, I saw the first 6 or 7 episodes broadcast on PBS, then I had to leave the city I was in for the summer and missed the rest. The next year, the exact same thing happened, then I left that city for good. I finally got a chance to see them all when they came out on DVD.

50. just look at a map
syria is between Iraq and Israel -- Israel is on the Meditterean Sea, and would provide easy access to sea ports, thus eliminating the need to go through the Gulf/Arabian Sea

after Syria is invaded -- guess where the Pipe line is going?

15. A stupid question..if we invade another country, won't this cause a
world war? I'm sorry, but I just don't see the major countries allowing this to happen again. Am I wrong? It's a sad thought, but I hope that if Bush invades another country, that we get our butts kicked by the other major countries. It's the only way to teach these fools that voted for him a lesson on how America is not "invincible". And, it could be the only way to get rid of these people who are in our government. I really feel that we are going to be victims of this man who is in charge no matter what!

17. Depends which one you pick
Iran? No - everyone'll just let the Iranians sort you out.
Syria? No - will be messy if Israel joins in but otherwise little effect
Sudan? No - doubt anyone would notice.
Haiti? Maybe a little diplomatic fuss but that's all.
Britain? After Blair's brown-nosing? No-one would mourn (except us).
North Korea? Ha ha ha ha ... you think Bush would invade someone armed?
China? Hell yes, WWIII (but even Bush isn't *that* stupid).

So, in short, I doubt it will make much difference.

46. I disagree a little on that synopsis
Syria is no slouch as far as armed forces come. They are generally respected by the Israeli armed forces although they have never won a battle. They have modern equipment including Air power. Plus we still have to have a huge operation in Iraq. If JerkAss Bush wants to attack Syria, shit bring em on.

Then again, I guess with the American public you could blame Syria or Iran for 9-11 and a month later 75% of the public would accept it as the truth.

DJ Iraq Shuts One Syrian-Iraq Border Crossing-Syria Official

DAMASCUS (AP)--Iraq closed one of the crossings on the Syrian-Iraqi border
Thursday, a Syrian customs official said.
The Tanaf crossing, which is 280 kilometers northeast of Damascus, was closed
by the authorities in western Iraq, where it is known as al-Walid, the official
said, speaking on customary condition of anonymity.
There was no word on the closure from the Iraqi government and the U.S.
military forces in Iraq. The Iraqi authorities close one or more of the three
crossings into Syria from time to time, but they usually decline to give a
reason, saying the closure is an operational matter.
The closure came as U.S. warplanes struck parts of the western Iraqi city of
Fallujah Thursday, targeting insurgents in preparation for a major ground
offensive on the militant stronghold.

But since it hasnt happened yet theres still time to place your bets on the date! I'll guess something big will happen November 11. And IF i'm correct, then i get a no-prize for posting 11/11/04 in a Will Pitt thread back during the olympics. if im WRONG, guess im not as enlightened as prophet pat robertson. (then again, i'm not claiming that God told me this either! :)

i also think a domestic (cheney) attack precludes any attack on Syria.

45. Guess you are right about the "surgical"air strikes on the US
since a school in New Jersey -- Little Egg Harbor -- was fired on by a US Jet.

Or did you mean -- surgical air strikes on Syria by US and Israel?

You could be correct about Israel -- they were just given 500 bunker buster bombs -- bet they would love to try out their new toys.

The fundamentalist will be so pleased -- they want Armageddon and attacking more Islamic countries is like beating the heck out of a hornet's net.
