Kennedy nephew boosts legacy

Shriver captures Santa Monica seat

SANTA MONICA – Bobby Shriver became the latest addition to his famous family's political legacy by gaining a seat on the Santa Monica City Council.

Shriver, the nephew of President John F. Kennedy and brother of Maria Shriver, wife of Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, had 17 percent of the vote with 100 percent of precincts reporting.

That gave him more of the vote than any of the 16 other candidates, including four incumbents, seeking four council seats in the nonpartisan race.

Although he hasn't held public office before, the 50-year-old lawyer said he's always been interested in helping people.

"I've been in the family business all my life," Shriver said after his victory. "The family business was looking out for the little guy."
