Don't slit your wrists over election, Michael Moore urges Democrats
LOS ANGELES (AFP) - Outspoken US filmmaker Michael Moore urged despondent Democrats not to "slit their wrists" over the outcome of the US election that gave President George W. Bush another four-year term.

The call from Moore, who made the Bush-bashing documentary "Fahrenheit 9/11" and spent much of the past year urging Americans to oust Bush, came as he broke his three-day silence following the defeat of Democratic challenger John Kerry in Tuesday's election.

"Ok, it sucks. Really sucks," Moore told his liberal fans in a message posted on his website that listed 17 reasons why Americans should "not to slit your wrists" over Bush's re-election to a second term.

"But before you go and cash it all in, let's, in the words of Monty Python, 'always look on the bright side of life!' There IS some good news from Tuesday's election," he consoled his anti-Bush minions.

Among the arguments Moore cited for not despairing were surveys that show a majority of Americans, 56 percent, think the country is headed in the wrong direction and 51 percent who do not think the war in Iraq was worth fighting.

2. Not sure whether such is your intent but
If you want to slit your wrists be my guest. Myself, I'm still alive and will continue to fight since the toughest part is yet to come. No one said it would be easy.

One thing we can all agree on Bush did not win a mandate for radical change.

4. Ok, when they say 56% believe the country is going in the wrong direction,
what do they mean by wrong direction?

When I answer the question, I think we're going in the wrong direction TOWARD an ownership society and endless war.

But I'm sure others think we are going in the wrong direction toward "liberalism" and all the debauchery that would obviously bring about (including God's wrath in the form of natural disasters and more terrorist attacks.)

5. It is a big mistake to look toward anything more than affecting
local races. We have to stay focused and concenrate on as many vunerable locally elected officials. We cannot elect a president if we are not able to elect a dog catcher.

All politics is local.

for trying to hold us up. Its been such a dark and painful
time and we need all the support we can get to see a bit
of light up ahead. Elizabeth Edwards gave us a wonderful
uplifting message, we have such wonderful people in our
party.

8. Problem is, MM is now persona non grata in the democratic party
Nobody will want to associate with him or let him speak for them. I don't think his mainstream visibility will last much longer.

11. Who're they going to blame for the loss?
There are a few obvious scapegoats, and Moore is at the top of the list. Cahill will take some of the fall for not hitting the swiftvets hard and immediately. Somebody will gin something up to blame on McCauliffe, probably. Either way, somebody's going down, and Moore will likely be blamed for turning off the fly-over folks.

14. I replied above, but I should clarify.
By "they", I mean the people that were distant enough from the campaign, and powerful enough before the campaign, to assume the positions of power that will now change hands. Specifically, this includes Hillary (and Bill maybe), Dodd, Lieberman, maybe Bill Richardson, Edwards (obviously he wasn't far from the campaign, but he can shift blame quite easily), and probably some guys/gals who will emerge from a previously demure position. I also think Teresa will get scapegoated for her sauciness.

13. Well said,
As a fellow Michiganian, I'm glad to see Mike rallying the troops. I'm bummed along with everyone else here and I know that Kerry would have made a great president, but we can't sit around and mope about it, we have to focus on convincing the American people of our agenda and organize at every level, from the top to the grassroots so that we can translate this agenda into some progress for America.

what ever happened to Mr. "We have registered millions of new voters, and the pollsters don't poll them! They are coming out to vote straight Kerry, you watch, we are going to win this. America is liberal, not conservative!" :eyes:

I've had it up to here with Michael Moore, he is as much a loser as Kerry, and I hope we never see either again, they are both monuments to failure.

19. Kerry, a loser?
Come on, now. I know you're angry, but that's not fair.

We ran a strong candidate this year against one of the weakest and worst candidates the Republicans have ever offered. As pathetic as this is to say, John Kerry actually speaks in complete sentences. Bush, quite obviously, does not. John Kerry is a decorated war hero who has served the people in public office for most of his adult life. Bush is a draft-dodger who has destroyed every business he's ever run and who seems to serve only himself and his rich friends. According to the American people, in scientific polls taken immediately afterward, John Kerry won all three debates. The Democrats had more money than usual this time--nearly as much as the Republicans. They fought toe-to-toe in television advertising across the nation. By one count, the Democrats registered three times as many new voters as the Republicans did for this election.

And you know what? None of this mattered! The Democrats still lost. There's nothing wrong with the Democratic party, and there's nothing wrong with Kerry. There's something very wrong with American democracy. Can't win if the machines won't let you ...

... and we're not sure that Kerry has given up yet. Patience! :toast:

All the new voters in the world are not going to make a bit of difference when the repukes control the voting machines. YOu can't blame MM for yet another election being stolen by a bunch of greedy power hungry liars.

33. The bright side is that he is on OUR side
He makes movies that get the word out. He HAS a voice, and he uses it in furtherance of our causes. He has hours and hours of footage of what happened in OH and FL.

Eating your own isn't going to help the situation. Democrats have two choices: keep fighting, or give up. I'll pick the first option.

The guy's talked through his ass on many other subjects. For example he said Hillary Clinton was a lesbian. Are we to give him credibility now because it suits our purpose?

21. You can throw all the stats and numbers out here you want...
...but the fact remains, we've got 59,000,000+ idiots in this country who believe Bush is the man for the moment. Just between you and me, I hold people like Mary Beth Cahill responsible. This was Kerry's campaign to lose, and she lost it for him. Carville and the guys came in just a few weeks too late. But, after everything we know about bush, it certianly does baffle the imagination. It's like The Daily Mirror in the UK so eloquently stated, "How can 59,054,087 million people be so Dumb?"

Word is Kerry wanted to answer the SBVT right away but she decided against it. It was only after their internal polls showed the group's ads were having some effect did she decide to do something about them.

Clinton's campaign would have dealt with the issue right away,

The good Sisters of Notre Dame taught her to play fair, and not respond to blatant lies and dirty dealing. Oh, well. We've since learned that crime does pay.

The best weapon, though, is the truth. This house of lies built by weecowboy will eventually crumble.

38. They certainly would have...
...But, I think if Carville and the rest of them had been "involved" from the beginning, we would be looking at another 1 term Bush. She really dropped the ball on this one. I guess I can't fault her for being a good person, she's obviously a good person, but she just isn't the pitbull we needed and the Kerry guys recognized this a bit too late. Carville fills that bill perfectly.

30. Gift horse?
Not trying to be contrary here, but I am not convinced that Michael Moore put more votes in the D column than he turned away. His message may be incisive, but it is not inclusive. It's hard to win majorities in elections if your message bearers drive millions of voters away.

Note that I did not say MM hasn't got a role to play; I just question whether that role is as a de facto figurehead for the party's positions.

If anyone has seen an analysis (not an opinion) of his net contribution, I'd be grateful for the link.

Meanwhile, I agree with another poster who noted that while the election season turned out poorly for Democrats, it turned out pretty well for MM.
