Bush may tap Hispanic and black for key jobs
from http://www.iht.com/articles/2004/11/05/news/justice.html

The International Herald Tribune

(snip)
WASHINGTON -- In the wake of President George W. Bush's re-election, the nation could soon have its first black attorney general and its first Hispanic justice on the Supreme Court, according to Republican insiders with ties to the Justice Department and the White House.
.
Several of the insiders, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Thursday that Attorney General John Ashcroft had apparently told Bush that he wanted to step aside in the second term.
.
Their overwhelming consensus is that Ashcroft's former deputy attorney general, Larry Thompson, can have the job if he is willing to walk away from a position as a senior vice president at PepsiCo. Thompson, a former federal prosecutor in Atlanta, would become the first black attorney general if nominated by Bush and confirmed by the Senate....

many said Bush will move ... to put the first Hispanic on the court, suggesting that the White House counsel Alberto Gonzales, a former justice of the Texas Supreme Court, would be his choice.
.
Gonzales is mistrusted by some liberals for writing a legal memorandum signing off on withholding Geneva Convention protections to detainees in the war on terrorism, but many said his chances are good because he is well liked by Bush and because Democrats may fear trying to block the first Hispanic nominee.

9. I don't give a shit
I hate it when people tell me (I'm Latina, by the way) that if there are more of us in prominent positions, the better we get represented. Well some anti-labor right wing asshat does not represent me. I don't care if they're browner than me.

10. What a pandering piece of shit.
He didn't allow one of his "blacks" to do his job (Colin Powell). Condoleeza Rice wasn't up to her job. Any Dem that doesn't point out this tokenism is a fucking fuck face coward.

12. Hispanic? So he has a place for Pinochet in the new adminstration?
Head of the department of justice, maybe?

These republicans are so open minded. I mean appointing someone with a hispanic name to such an important post.

Yes I am very darkly cynical.

17. What better way...
to shut the mouths of all the African Americans who were disenfranchised during this and the 2000 elections? Put them in a position where if they complain, then they are being disloyal "to their own race."

16. If it's anything like his appointments of Rice, Powell, and Pickering....
it doesn't mean shit. Might as well have a minstrel show, that's how much they will represent the interests of the communities from which those of similar skin tones come from.

The Chimp is fooling no one.
