Vandals hit GOP HQ in North Carolina

RALEIGH, N.C. - Vandals spray painted vulgar messages on the walls of the North Carolina Republican Party headquarters and left a burned effigy depicting President Bush (news - web sites) and Sen. John Kerry (news - web sites), police said.

Authorities detained several suspects early Saturday, hours after the attacks took place Friday night, but had not filed any charges, police spokesman Jim Sughrue said.

A police officer reported Friday that about 100 people wearing masks and gloves were walking down a street near the headquarters, authorities said.

9. Do a search on him ..
He's a GOP operative who likes to stage "occurrences" at rallies and fundraisers using his family members to make Dems look bad.

with the little girl crying cause someone tore up her sign?
If so , this seems too surreal for that sort of a mind.

27. Yes, and photo compares
... revealed that the 'thug' who tore up the sign was actually another one of his kids, dressed as a 'union worker'.

And more evidence has come out that he's used his own family to stage this sort of thing before.

And I think he's also got a column in some small-town fundie newsrag.

He's a real freak.

5. I like this quote...
"The people who did this are sick," said Kevin Howell, communications director for the state Republican Party. "People don't understand that debate and elections are part of the process. This isn't how you act."

Umm, maybe they were wearing masks and gloves for a reason? Like they didn't want to be identified?
And "sick" is a most relative term nowadays...

43. So I guess he thinks
that the patriots that disguised themselves at the boston tea party were sick and disgusting. They were not patriots but terrorist in his and the repubs eyes. I always think back that the repubs would have been the party of the Tories (loyalist to the king back during the revolution). They must hate the founding fathers.

23. Effigies: An Old-Fashioned American Tradition
I think I'd like to see more right-wingers burned in effigy. Burning in effigy once used to be a valued part of nineteenth-century American political theatre. We progressives have grown far too nice and far too well-behaved for our own good. I am convinced that that's one reason we've done so poorly. We set aside not only traditions like political parades, but also things like truth squads and heckling. We really ought to consider bringing a good old American tradition like burning in effigy back from extinction.

I wonder how many of the very thin-skinned right-wingers like O'Reilly, like DeLay, like Coburn, like Santorum, etc. could be brave enough to shrug off a return to that old-time American tradition with their images as objects of burning scorn? Very few of them, if any. I suspect that most of them would be shrieking like they were being skinned alive right then and there.

I don't think that the Greedy Oligarchs' Plunder Party is going to be nearly so lucky for the rest of Gee Dubya's term as it was this year. If another downturn hits us, some Republican incumbents will be lucky if it's only their image that suffers serious bodily harm at the hands of their infuriated former supporters.

36. No
I attended state years ago and live in the area now. Pranks consisted of getting drunk and burning stuff like furniture. Moving cars around. etc. This was an attack.

Masks, firebombs, and effigies take planning and being really drunk or stoned tend to stop this.

IMHO. This was not a prank. They damaged a bank as well. People are in custody. Attempted arson, destruction of property, big felonies. Central prison is not a fun place..I wonder if they will turn rat to save their cornholes.

13. Nov. 5 is Guy Fawkes (sp?) day in the UK.
The British celebrate the memory of their most famous traitor by building bonfires, shooting off fireworks and burning effigies of Mr. Fawkes. There was a thread on this topic yesterday. Maybe Nov. 2 could be our * day.

16. Is it so wrong
Is it wrong to commit crimes against people of differing political views. Ann Coulter advocates for it. The city council member, Jerry Duncan, from Fresno CA says we should do it. So are they just getting what it is they think is the best. Have you once heard anybody tell Ann Coulter to be careful she might get what she ask for? Not one person that I can think of has said it to her. She did get hit with a pie in AZ last month while at a speaking engagement. Now the republicans, the party of morals gets vandalized. Maybe if the party truly had morals and shut Ann Coulters' mouth, jailed Rush for illegal drugs, incarcerated O'Reiley for sexual harassment I would feel bad for them. Instead they do not even try to distance themselves from these people, they welcome them with open arms. When the world they have created turns and bites them on the ass they say it is sick. What is sick is that the republicans think they have any business criticizing this behavior.

17. Not yet.
For example, our Employment Discrimination laws are very specific about who cannot be discriminated against. Politics is not included, but I can read the signs. Religion IS included, however, the definition of religion means a strong belief in something so it will only take a little more conservative lawyering to stretch that to mean politics. That is the danger of strict constructionism which is what Scalia does. His opinions are based on stretching the meaning of just one word.

21. Here is what is scary
I have seen talk on here that Bush is looking to make Scalia the lead/head/chief justice on the SCOTUS. I am not sure if that would give him any extra power, but him being in charge of anything is a scary thought.

29. What scares me if Scalia becomes head wizard is this:
The right-wing fruitcakes in the U.S. will realize that Scalia is so draconian that supporting him was like painting yourself in a corner. What they will do at that point to their own scares me to death because whatever it is, will probably be pinned on us.

18. Kristal Nicht
or however you spell it.

That was my first impression. The image of the "suicidal democrats" or "depressed liberals" committing crimes. A setup, to make Dems look so bad that they can be rounded up into camps.

I still remember Rush, less than three months into *'s pResidency, saying something to the effect of "Yeah, those stupid liberals would have had you believe that we would shred the constitution, throw people into concentration camps, and wreck the economy. Well, here it is, and none of that has happened!".

Funny, that's so September 10th . . .

and an old one at that. Sen. George Allen (Racist-VA) spraypainted anti-white graffiti on the walls of our high school back in 1970 to incite racial hatred against blacks. Sounds like he's been giving lessons to the party faithful.

37. Raleigh is an odd pick.
Police here are usually quite friendly but would not hesitate to shoot someone who threw a firebomb at them with a shotgun.

This is not Seattle, police here are not tolerant of bullshit.

Residents here are also not likely to tolerate an attack on their property. In NC trespass onto private property after dark automatically meets the bar for use of deadly force.
