Demo Leader (Pelosi) Ready to Work W/ Bush (Weekly Demo Radio Speech)
WASHINGTON -- Days after her party lost congressional seats and the White House race, California Rep. Nancy Pelosi struck a conciliatory tone, saying House Democrats "stand ready to work with" President Bush in his second term.

The message from the House minority leader, speaking Saturday in the weekly Democratic radio address, was in stark contrast to the pre-election combativeness of late September when she used the same forum to call Bush's Iraq war a "grotesque mistake."

Now in the immediate aftermath of a bitterly fought election, Pelosi summoned Republican cooperation on initiatives she said both parties should support -- better jobs, health care and education.

She called for "more discourse and less discord" in the Congress but still pledged to not budge on issues where the two parties diverge.

"There are places where we differ, as well, and Democrats will stand our ground," Pelosi said.

I'm beginning to think we need a real change. I would rather gamble and lose everything, than play this half-ass-ed (no pun intended)game. Sorry, I promised myself I was going to quit cursing, but that went out the window. I'm beginning to become sick of my own party and their wishy washy attitude.

7. Oh, y'all. She has to say this.
She can't say we don't give a damn and we intend to fight him all the way. Her statement should be taken with the same huge grain of salt as Shrub's laughable claim that he wants to heal the divide between his Fascist party and the Democrats.

24. People need to stop freaking out
over every speech given by a Democrat. The point is not alienate the few Republicans in Washington who might side with us by immediately trashing all of them. Bush wants to pretend that he's making nice with the Dems, and the Dems are being just as two-faced and pretending that they're going along with it.

30. This is fine as long as actions speak louder than words..
I think she is playing it smart as long as she doesn't compromise when the rubber meets the road. We will see.

We missed a perfect opportunity to let the world know it is the democrats that are the team players. In both Kerry's and Edward's debates their opponent mentioned how troubled they were with the rifts. Both said the relationships were great in the beginning but they just didn't know what happened. * even almost sounded like he might consider it a shortcoming.......if he had any...

both * and Cheney walked right into it....exactly it was successful when the democrats were the majority. Once in the debate it should have been hammered home.

36. She must be devastated.
I don't know what alternative anyone thinks she had. Should she stomp her feet and resign? Should she give us directions to an undergroud railroad to Canada?

Nancy Pelosi is responsible for a coalition of 126 NO votes on the IWR. Gephardt went to the Rose Garden for photos but does anyone remember how rebellious those votes were at the time?

I don't agree with her on a number of things but pitching a fit right now would be disastrous. We need her brains, her political skills and her committment to keep working for us. Three of our powerful Senators are already talking of bailing to run for governor.

When she calls for "more discourse and less discord", she's talking to the House REPUBLICAN leadership.

37. Some people just don't "get it" party_line. People in Washington are
expected to try and find common ground.

However, this part of what she said is key: SHE... pledged to not budge on issues where the two parties diverge.

There you have it. Next.

43. Please don't overreact to this.
This is just part of the post-election ceremonial blather. I'd say we have a better chance of Paris Hilton entering a convent than the 'cans suddenly turning into bipartisan team players and Nancy Pelosi rubber-stamping their right-wing plans. The House GOP leadership doesn't even allow alternative amendments from the Democrats. There's been considerable acrimony, and I expect the new era of bipartisanship to last until Veterans' Day 2004.
