US ready to put weapons in space

Defence expert says America is likely to ignore treaty ban

Mark Townsend
Sunday November 7, 2004
The Observer

America has begun preparing its next military objective - space. Documents reveal that the US Air Force has for the first time adopted a doctrine to establish 'space superiority'.
The new doctrine means that pre-emptive strikes against enemy satellites would become 'crucial steps in any military operation'. This week defence experts will attend a conference in London amid warnings that President Bush's re-election will pave the way to the arming of space.

Internal USAF documents reveal that seizing control of the 'final frontier' is deemed essential for modern warfare. Counterspace Operations reveals that destroying enemy satellites would improve the chance of victory. It states: 'Space superiority provides freedom to attack as well as freedom from attack. Space and air superiority are crucial first steps in any military operation.'

Theresa Hitchens, vice-president of a Washington-based independent think-tank, the Centre for Defence Information, said: 'These documents show that they are taking space control seriously.'

7. I think Rumsfeld is ultimately going to have to make a choice...
...between robot soldiers, space lasers, and the Moon base.

Anyone remember to order bullets this month?

4. This is way beyond PNAC
They're going for *world* domination.
And this is not a week past the election?
Good Lord, save us from these evil men.

10. Actually this is specifically mentioned in PNAC
Edited on Sun Nov-07-04 09:27 AM by TroubleMan
They mention it several times:

Hit control-f and search for space.

3. Other space power's answer...
Simply launch several rockets loaded with ball bearings.... and
dump them in space with a small explosion... adding a few million
parts to the space junk that orbits the earth at bullet-like speeds.

The really sad part, is that when they DO screw with another nation's
satellites... and the hubble telescope disappears, along with 16
GPS satellites, they'll realize how stupid they've been.... maybe not. Too stupid to be self aware... indeed.

5. "crucial FIRST steps in any military operation"
"Preemptive" invasions of any nation, anywhere. The only "right" is might; the only "law" is whatever Ba'alzedubya sez!

6. a lot of space raiders are in on PNAC:
Francis Fukuyama--a "transhumanist" who wants funding for uploading people into computers and superhuman AIs--is a signatory to the PNAC statement (though he doesn't like the Invasion of Iraq).
Some say that the ONLY hope of humanity is to plunder and mine out all the asteroids and celestial bodies (probably so their SciFi "asteroid range wars" fantasies can be carried out in real life and we can all be space libertarians).
Their ilk crushed the Moon Treaty; from some "L5" group site:
"The Agreement Governing the Activities of States on the Moon and Other Celestial Bodies (1979) is the infamous 'Moon Treaty'. It was killed by a handful of L5 Society Society activists who were the first to see that it would outlaw property rights in the rest of the universe and indefinitely bog down space settlement in a 'common heritage of all mankind' morass. When as a result of the L5 Society efforts the US congress failed to ratify the treaty, the USSR also breathed a sigh of relief." Marge Thatcher clones with space-opera colonialization rockets in their pants. Oh joy!

8. They can't defend NYC from terrorists with boxcutters...
Edited on Sun Nov-07-04 07:39 AM by teryang
They can't provide enough Kevlar or armor vehicles in Iraq. But they are going to dominate space pre-emptively with massive multi-billion dollar aerospace boon-doggles.

The military industrial complex stole the election and are masters of the universe but they can't secure enemy ammo dumps during a war.

At this rate we'll be practicing "Duck and Cover" maneuvers in grade schools by 2006.

12. But there's no oil in space?
Dubya must be indulging his fetish for breaking international treaties. It's still better than showers with pastries, though.

13. This has been in the works for sometime
From talking to x-NASA people and those still in, this move has been in the works. The US now has two treaties standing between it and the militarization of space. Both destined to be ignored. While NASA has been starved for money as a civilian institution, the money has quietly been going into the Pentagon budget with the intent of folding our space program into the department.

As unfucking believable as it is, we are giving up "space" as a peaceful project and now consider it a military objective.

Note: This is not the first time I've written about this at DU.

This is an extremely important subject so I'll give it a kick. I'm sure William Gibson would agree with me. This is a look to the future.
