Lawyer: Hinckley No Longer Mentally Ill
Lawyer: Hinckley No Longer Mentally Ill
Associated Press
Monday, November 8, 2004; 11:24 AM

A lawyer for John Hinckley Jr. told a federal judge in Washington today that his client is no longer mentally ill.

Attorney Barry Levine says Hinckley should be allowed longer unsupervised visits away from the mental hospital where he has lived since trying to assassinate President Reagan in 1981.

Levine accused government lawyers of fear-mongering by opposing Hinckley's request on grounds he remains a danger to the community.

Hinckley wants a federal judge to allow him to take four-day, unsupervised visits every two weeks to his parents' home in Williamsburg. Hinckley has been allowed shorter visits with his parents in the past year and now his lawyers say he is ready for longer trips.

2. Must resist....
Must not make completely tasteless and classless joke about political assasinations, phone calls from Jodie Foster, and that year ending in zero curse thing....Fighting urge.

Still fighting.

I think I'm OK now.

Sigh of relief.

7. Bwahahaha, was thinking the same thing - right down to the year ending
in zero curse thing!

That curse and the fact that Nixon got re-elected too are the only things helping me keep my sanity and humor. Without them I'd be in a very deep depression.

4. Hinckley is a political prisoner --
1. He is no longer mentally ill (with the illness that caused him to attempt the assassination). People DO recover -- and according to ALL the Psychiatrists/Doctors who have examined him -- INCLUDING the Government's Doctors, he no longer has the condition.

2. The FACT, however much we may or may not like it, is that John Hinkley has been a political prisoner -- illegally held -- for several years now. There is NO legal basis to hold him. In fact, his continued detention at ALL is ILLEGAL under US law. If we don't like it -- we should revise the laws. But we should NOT support the illegal detention of prisoners however distasteful they may be to us personally. His recent years is a testament to the power of the lawless Reagan/Bush era government. They have openly and defiantly advocated breaking the law, denying the facts, as attested to by their own lawyers, and held him as a political prisoner.

I worked on this case more than 10 years ago. And I know the lawyers who are involved in the case. You may say "couldn't happen to a nicer guy" and all that -- but his life is a cautionary tale to us all. Long before the illegal detentions at Guatanamo and elsewhere, the government was breaking the law with him. And (almost) no one cared, because his case wasn't popular. Because he was a "distasteful" sort of guy.

So far, it's only been used to house a drunk/druggie and his family.

13. Well then throw him in jail w/ Sirhan Sirhan
Just because he's a friend of the Bush family and has bucks doesn't mean he gets to be the only guy in the last oh, 24 years who actually gets a "Not Guilty by Reason of Insanity" free pass. Lot's of retarded black men have been executed while this idiot whiles his days away at an "exclusive" facility, and gets passes to go visit mom and dad. Oh please!

22. Yes, the day after he shot Reagan
Neil Bush was supposed to have dinner with Hinckley's brother. The Bushes and Hinckleys were all doing business (more likely stealing and defrauding) together.
