MSNBC Breaking: Ashcroft resigns
Edited on Tue Nov-09-04 05:57 PM by lazarus
Just on MSNBC, Ashcroft has resigned, as has the Commerce Secretary Don Evans. More as it develops. If anyone has a link, please post it.

Update: He's apparently been wanting to resign for some time, but Bush wouldn't accept the resignation.

Another update, we've got linkage!

154. If any person can be as demented and evil, not to mention
aghast at the protections actually offered by our constitution as John "Mein Furher" Ashcroft, well, outside of Feith, Cheney and a few other crazies, not one person I can think of could be worse. Ergo, any change must be better.

Those to the ultra-right of Ashcroft, well, even this brain-damaged congress won't approve.

unless,

Bush is truly the anti-christ and all those religious classes I snored through are coming back to haunt me.

and hookers. And stopping 'death with dignity'. And violating gag orders. And not investigating Halliburton. And haulin' the Ten Commandments monument across the country. And losing every terror related case so far.

Fits right in with the Christian Reconstructionists' death penalty agenda: Kill homosexuals, blasphemers, heretics, witches, abortionists, idolaters, adulterers...nah, wait a minute--that'd be half the Republican leadership, huh? Never mind...

My money's on Rudy Giuliani. Gotta be some reason he's been kissing Bush's you-know-what lately!

And think of the damage he could inflict upon the nation in a short period of time.

And since the republicans, because of electronic voting machines, are now permanently in control of the government, they can just replace Ashcroft at will when he resigns or dies.

113. My bet: replacement will be just as evil, only smarter
Ashcroft was simply too dumb to be an effective henchman. They needed him for the fundie vote until now.

They are going to take their time until they can announce a replacement choice that will cause massive coronaries amongst as many dem voters as possible.

Ken Starr?

It's a blatant move to take the edge off of some of the criticism aimed at the more extreme elements of Bush's administration. Ashcroft and his ilk aren't going anywhere. The fundies know that, otherwise they'd be rioting in the streets.

This is standard, many cabinet officials change for a second term.

Although I think Ashcroft is going to be considered for a judicial post, either SCOTUS or someething almost as high up.

Ashcroft is leaving because he is not in good health. Bush wants his SCOTUS nominees to be young and in great health. Ashcroft is pretty much finished in government.

WASHINGTON - The Treasury Department (news - web sites) official in charge of keeping tabs on the nation's financial markets, including Wall Street, announced Monday that he intends to leave his post at the end of December.

Brian Roseboro, the department's undersecretary for domestic finance, revealed his intentions in a resignation letter to President Bush (news - web sites). Roseboro, who has been with Treasury since 2001, was sworn in as undersecretary on April 16 of this year.

Bush would be responsible for tapping a new undersecretary, a nomination that would be subject to Senate approval.

Aside from his nasty confirmation hearings, it seems like Asscroft has kept a fairly low profile. I know he was a proponent of the Patriot Act, but this was approved by a majority in congress and could have been filibustered by the senate dems. In terms of his actions as AG, Asscroft didn't seem to live up to his billing as the next coming of Hitler.

143. Here's some good dirt on Racicot, Dubya's "re"-election campaign mgr:
REPUBLICAN MARC RACICOT
Col. Oliver North became a controversial figure during the Reagan administration scandal known as the Iran-Contra affair. The scandal involved off-the-books efforts to fund the resistance to Marxian governments in Central America. The funding efforts became entangled in Oliver North's scheme to finance the operation with sales of cocaine in the United States.

Much of the operation coincided with the use of Arkansas airstrips in and around the small town of Mena. CIA operative Barry Seal was involved in the drug enterprise. After Seal was indicted, when the airstrips around Mena came under heavy surveillance, the southern smuggling operation was shifted to Canada and Montana. Barry Seal flew into the Canadian border area with Montana and North Dakota several times before he was assassinated.

The Seal flights were likely made to coordinate the new smuggling operation from Canada. Mike Huxtable, was helping with the flights through Canada, including both Chapeau airstrip in Quebec and another outside of Weyburn, Saskatchewan. The Weyburn staging area supplied "protected" landing strips in Sidney, Chinook, the Fort Peck Reservation, and Havre in Montana. Eventually hundreds of flights were made into Montana bearing billions of dollars worth of cocaine and heroin.

The safety of the illicit cargoes was protected by obtaining the co-operation of corrupt police and prosecutors in Montana. The coordination of involvement of the county attorneys in the scheme was managed by Marc Racicot, then in the Montana Attorney General's office.

Marc Racicot received payments for his efforts, which were deposited in accounts in the Norwest Bank of Helena. Marc Racicot took it upon himself to squelch investigations involving drug allegations against prosecutors in Sidney and Chinook. Many of the witnesses were intimidated and several died under highly suspicious circumstances.

http://www.copi.com/articles/montana/980505.html

Can't vouch for the source, but would you buy a used car from Racicot?

Ashcroft, in a five-page, handwritten letter to Bush, said, "The objective of securing the safety of Americans from crime and terror has been achieved."

Ashcroft bows out claiming mission is over

<snip>
Mr Ashcroft, a hate figure among Democrats for his crackdown on civil liberties after the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, has been unwell for some months, although he was thought a likely candidate for the chop in a reshuffle.

Mr Ashcroft, a former Missouri senator and governor, used a five-page handwritten letter to Mr Bush to claim victory in his front on the War on Terror. “The objective of securing the safety of Americans from crime and terror has been achieved,” he said.

Mr Evans is a long-time friend and former drinking buddy of Mr Bush who played a key role in his conversion to teetotalism and religion.

He ran a Texas oil and gas company before joining the Bush Administration, and managed Mr Bush’s first presidential campaign. His name has been linked with a possible vacancy in the US Treasury if Mr Bush decides to dismiss John Snow, the Treasury Secretary, but Mr Evans has made clear for some time that he wants to return to Texas after four years in Washington.

137. Ahh....
The Constitution is breathing a sigh of relief that this treasonous fellow is no longer in the Cabinet. Let's hope Bush appoints someone who actually cares about the law, and doesn't use 9-11 to take away personal liberties. One down, but we still have Rummy, Bush, and Cheney left to go.

167. Does anyone else suspect that Ashcroft's resignation has to do with 9-11?
Remember, there are still pending reports and other info that lay blame for the Bush administration's failure to take steps to prevent 9-11.

I wouldn't be surprised if those reports point to him as being particularly negligant..

I'm sure there's a far more evil nominee just down the pike, but for now, nothing but rose petals, hugs, and blow-kisses to Mr. Ashcroft on the occasion of his departure up out my life.

Don't let the door... you know the drill.

Do you really think the Emperor will appoint someone who is LESS of a MONSTER, less LOYAL to the IMPERIAL FAMILY?

No, I believe that a "more Himmler than Himmler" is coming.
