Iraq to send minister to Arab League meeting despite not being invited

BAGHDAD (AFP) - Iraq's US-backed Governing Council said it would send the country's newly appointed acting foreign minister to an Arab League meeting next week despite not being invited.

"The Governing Council has requested the Minister of Foreign Affairs to inform the League of Arab States that Iraq intends to take its rightful place at the conference of Arab League foreign ministers scheduled for 9 September," said a statement from council president, Ahmad Chalabi.

Iraq will be represented at the conference at the league's Cairo headquarters by Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari, the statement added.

On Tuesday a Governing Council envoy was barred from a meeting of the 22-member league's permanent representatives in the Egyptian capital.
