No sign Elizabeth Edwards' cancer spread
http://www.kansascity.com/mld/kansascity/news/local/10148438.htm?1c

<snip>

WASHINGTON - Elizabeth Edwards, wife of former Democratic vice presidential candidate John Edwards, has begun chemotherapy to shrink a half-dollar-sized lump in her breast. Doctors found no sign the cancer had spread, a family spokesman said Wednesday.

After a 16-week chemotherapy course, Edwards will take a four- to six-week break. Georgetown University Medical Center doctors who are treating Edwards will then surgically remove the lump.

A needle biopsy of Edwards' lymph nodes Tuesday found "no indication of cancer," spokesman David Ginsberg said. "From what we know now, it has not spread."

As a safety precaution, however, doctors will remove some of her healthy lymph node tissue. Edwards will then undergo radiation.

10. That is good news
I am so happy for Elizabeth Edwards and her family. We needed some good news. She will be a cancer survivor. She still has a tough road ahead of her. Chemo is not easy.

I wish her a strong healing life force to make it through the tough time ahead.

Take care Elizabeth.

Sonia

13. Thank goodness...She still faces difficult treatment that is brutal on the
body, but she has such strength that she will come through it and be healthy and all the stronger for it....

I live in a county in the US (Marin County, CA) that has the highest rate of breast cancer in the country in women over 40....they don't know why either....There isn't a day that I don't think there for the grace of God go I....

23. I hope she's feeling ok.
That is really good news. I didn't even cry last week when JK conceded (I was too numb) but when I heard Elizabeth had cancer I just lost it. I hope her treatment is going well and that she doesn't get too sick from the chemo.

Elizabeth, if you read this, please know how much we are pulling for you. If you need anything just let me know. I live about 45 minute from DC so I could watch your children or keep you company during chemo or even find you something to help with the nausea if you need it. ;)

27. Good news!
Although she still faces a grueling treatment, it sounds great that there seems to be no spread of the disease.

A half-dollar size lump is really big. My sister-in-law had one the size of a fingertip and she had two surgeries and then chemo and radiation.

Best wishes to Elizabeth. I wish her a speedy and full recovery.

29. I hope it all works out
I was NOT happy to read this:

"Edwards, 55, said she discovered the lump in her right breast on Oct. 21, during a campaign trip. She said she had not gotten a mammogram in recent years."

Ladies, if you're over 40 (over 35 if you're high risk) GET THE DAMN MAMMOGRAM!!! Elizabeth's tumor is almost an inch in diameter. It's probably been growing for at least 2 years. I'm sorry, but a needle biopsy for lymph nodes doesn't mean shit. They'd better do a good dissection of her lymph nodes to rule out that it's spread. If it has, heaven help her.

My mother discovered the same sized tumor (she'd skipped her mammograms for 5 years), and the cancer had spread to her lymph nodes. Surgery, chemo and radiation bought her some time, but the cancer came back in her bones and bone marrow 6 years after her original diagnosis. More radiation and chemo. She died 3 years later.
