Marine Major Guilty in Prison Abuse Death

CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. - A jury of Marine Corps officers on Wednesday found a major guilty of maltreatment and dereliction of duty in connection with the death of an Iraqi inmate, but acquitted him of the most serious charge of assault and battery.
Maj. Clarke Paulus stood formally and showed no reaction as the jury foreman read the verdict after about six hours of deliberation.
Judge Col. Robert Chester declared a recess following the announcement, but the jury of eight officers requested that they be allowed to immediately begin deliberating Paulus' sentence.
Paulus would have faced a maximum of 1 1/2 years in a military prison if convicted of all charges. It was not immediately clear what his potential sentence would be in light of the verdict.
