GOP consultant: Bush win is bad news for moderates
A normally media-shy veteran Republican consultant has told an Israeli newspaper that President Bush's re-election victory demonstrates the power of evangelical Christians and spells trouble for GOP moderates.

"The political center has disappeared, and the Republican Party has become the party of the Christian right more so than in any other period in modern history," Arthur Finkelstein told the Hebrew-language Maariv, according to a report in Thursday editions of The New York Times.

"Bush's victory not only establishes the power of the American Christian right in this candidacy, but in fact established its power to elect the next Republican president," he told the Israeli daily, according to a translation done for Wednesday's New York Post, which first reported Finkelstein's comments.

Finkelstein has been a presence in American politics for several decades as a top adviser to former Sens. Alfonse D'Amato of New York and Jesse Helms of North Carolina, and to New York Gov. George Pataki. Pataki is considered a potential contender for the 2008 GOP presidential nomination.

4. On election day, I canvassed for Kerry in Kansas City...
Five of us linked up at the campaign office. One volunteered her van for transportation and the other four (myself included) canvassed a neighborhood to GOTV. Of the four, two were Republicans (a mother/daughter team). They identified themselves as moderate GOP and was motivated to campaign for Kerry/Edwards because of Bush's right-wing extremism.

I imagine there were many, many Republicans who campaigned and voted for Kerry/Edwards!

10. I'll bet the moderates hoped for Bush's defeat.
Then they could have rebuilt the Republican party into something less extreme. Perhaps actually "Conservative" in the old sense.

But, no. Surprise, surprise. They woke up in bed with Jerry Falwell & the even nuttier Christian Reconstructionists.

Coyote ugly, for sure.

12. They Sold Their Souls for Tax Cuts
Moderate Repigs are only concerned about their money. They're obsessed with it. They foolishly believe that they can control the fundies, and if they can't, their money will protect them from the worst that the fundies offer.

What these fools don't see is that the fundies won't stop until they've infiltrated ALL American institutions. Your money won't protect you when the fundies start dictating science and medical policy. Stem cells is only the beginning. Also, your money won't protect you when the fundies control what TV shows and movies you can watch nor what music you can listen to.

Their pandering to these people will come home to roost.

That would be sweet revenge if they targeted Murdocks Fox shows. How about Sinclair. Bring back Leave it to Beaver Shows. Ofcourse they would need to change the beaver part first.

16. They deserve him. Like Molly
Ivins says, tie GWB around their necks the way you train a dog not to kill chickens. After a few months, he's going to start to smell really odious and those moderates won't want what he's been selling ever again.
No mercy. They say they're for the environment, rights for women, minorities, and gays, separation of church and state, healthcare, and education. And they voted for Bush.
They're liars.
You don't support any of the above and vote for Bush.
Bad karma, moderates.
Atone now.

23. Well said!
I can find no sympathy whatsoever for people who essentially hand the keys to the car to a stumbling down drunk and then wring their hands and say "I had NO IDEA he would crash the car!" Bullshit!

I cannot wait for my "Don't Blame Me, I Voted For Kerry" bumper-sticker.

it doesn't happen often that I have to look a word up (I'm an English teacher). But I had to look up "coprophagic" and I laughed out loud.

I have a new word for freepers: coprophagists.

LMAO!

15. This is why Jews stuck with Kerry
I have a few friends who converted to the GOP this go around and were astonished that no one followed them. Kerry got 80% of Jewish voters because the Christian right scares the hell out of us. People don't sell out their core values on one issue - Israel - especially when Kerry was fine on the Middle East.

17. Israel is merely a piece of real estate to the Christian Right
It is where the end times will occur and where all jews must convert or die. They have no respect for Judaism itself or the people who practice it. Eventually these people will turn against jews.

29. It's not just Jews
that have to worry. Those who follow any faith that * and his regime disagree with are at risk too. I freely admit that I am Wiccan. I'm just hoping that they don't start 'witch hunts' against anyone who isn't Christian. I saw it coming when * stole the 2000 Election. Sad to say, I was blinded by him the first time, but not this time. America will be fashioned into a place where only Christian Conservatives have any rights or privileges.

When W was governor of Texas he tried to ban Wiccan and Pagan ceremonies in the military. "That's not a real religion," he sniffed.
