Saudi releases six militants who took up amnesty offer

RIYADH (AFP) - Saudi Arabia has reportedly released six people who turned themselves in under a one-month royal amnesty for wanted militants.

"Following royal orders, all those who turned themselves in to security authorities during the (amnesty) period were released," an interior ministry source told the official SPA news agency.

Saudi Arabia is fighting a fierce battle against a wave of terrorism, blamed on sympathizers of the Al-Qaeda network, that has claimed some 90 lives and wounded hundreds since May 2003.

Only six people responded to the amnesty offered by King Fahd to Al-Qaeda-linked extremists on June 23 before it ran out.
