Rumsfeld Says Hundreds of Iraqi Insurgents Killed

SAN SALVADOR, El Salvador (Reuters) - "Hundreds" of insurgents have been killed in Falluja as U.S. and Iraqi troops sweep through the besieged Iraq (news - web sites) city, Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld said on Thursday.



Rumsfeld, arriving in the capital of El Salvador (news - web sites) at the start of a weeklong visit to Latin America, told reporters some insurgents had probably escaped the attack started this week.


"I have no doubt but some people did leave before it started," he said.

Asked how long the offensive might last, Rumsfeld said: "I don't ever predict how long things will take. They will take as long as they take ... and it will end successfully and it will no longer be a safe haven for terrorists and extremists."

No it won't. Notice the use of the indefinite antecedent suitable for maximum vagueness. Neither the local nor the national theater conflict will "end successfully." Killing a several hundred in a conflict for national independence is extremely unlikely to be decisive or politically successful.

While the slaughter was going on, the Sunni's dropped out of the so called "sovereign" government of Iraq. That is a strategic defeat.
