Internet theories on election abound

Even Democratic Party officials discount claims of unfair practices

By Chip Reid
Correspondent
NBC News
Updated: 6:48 p.m. ET Nov. 11, 2004

President Bush declared victory eight days ago, but in the parallel universe known as the Internet, the presidential campaign is still raging. Web sites hostile to the president claim massive vote fraud, that the election was stolen, that Sen. Kerry really won.

Presidential candidate Ralph Nader says Republican officials in Ohio skewed the election towards Bush.

<snip>

In the Florida panhandle, they ask, how could Bush have won so big when registered Democrats far outnumber Republicans? In Ohio they claim a computer glitch gave Bush 4,000 extra votes. In many states, they insist, some voters pushed "Kerry" on touch screen machines, but the check appeared next to "Bush." And what about those early exit polls giving Kerry the lead? They say that means the election was stolen.

Convinced? Well, even the Kerry team is not, declaring in a statement Thursday that while they want every vote counted, "the outcome of the election is not in doubt.”

They can't deny us, even if they discount us. They won't be able to discount us forever, I think.

5. The Ohio glitch is not a "claim". It is an actual news story.
I'm too lazy to find it on their site, but I bet it's there.

That "reporter" needs to check his facts. Oh wait--that's not required anymore.

Some free press.

There's more factual information on FreepRepubic than there is on all of the TV "news" programs combined!

We know you know we know that, too, kool kids! As Hendrix once put it, "Comin to GITcha."

8. A few things not mentioned in this article
http://www.bostonphoenix.com/boston/news_features/other_stories/multi-page/documents/04256171.asp

MANY OF THOSE who did get to the polls had to wait ages to get to a booth. There were reports of waiting times of two-and-a-half-hours in Cleveland, five in Columbus, and six in the college town of Gambier.

This was all officially blamed on extraordinarily high turnout, but many disagree. After all, turnout was actually lower than predicted by the Secretary of State’s office, and the increase from 2000 worked out to just 64 additional voters per Ohio precinct. "Everybody saw it coming — the huge lines, the huge voter turnout," says Britton. "We’re very concerned that county officials did not adequately prepare."

"It was poor planning, and I think you lay that on the head of the governor and secretary of state," Trevas says.

But Republican governor Bob Taft and Blackwell did prepare: they reduced the number of polling places, ensuring long lines.
<...>

HERE’S THE rub: a Phoenix analysis shows that the precinct reductions disproportionately hurt Ohio’s Democratic turnout.

Of Ohio’s 88 counties, 20 suffered a significant reduction — shutting at least 20 percent (or at least 30) of their precincts. Most of those counties have Republicans serving as Board of Elections director, including the four biggest: Cuyahoga, Montgomery, Summit, and Lucas.

Those 20 counties went heavily to Gore in 2000, 53 to 42 percent. The other 68 counties, which underwent little-to-no precinct consolidation, went exactly the opposite way in 2000: 53 to 42 percent to Bush.

(a little more than four paragraphs, but several of them are one sentence paragraphs)

9. Voter suppression was the larger crime here
it should not be overlooked as a major factor.
The vote tampering needs to be proved still. Voter suppression is obvious.

32. Now we're getting somewhere
Thank you for pasting those paragraphs. That's been my contention all along, that the GOP used standard voter suppression and intimidation, most of it long before election day. That was their MO, not rigged machines. And it indicates why we desperately need to reclaim more governorships and high statewide offices to prevent theft like that.

11. Well, Olberman and Shuster are taking it seriously and Shuster's latest
blog on Hardblogger says the story will be on Hardball tomorrow. Shuster says in an earlier blog that there are definitely enough screw ups to initiate an investigation by the GAO.

He also talked to people about the Ohio recount.

This afternoon, I spoke with Blair Bobier, the attorney/spokesman for David Cobb, the Green Party's 2004 candidate for President. Bobier confirms that the press release floating on the net is legitimate. The Green Party is combining forces with the Libertarian Party to seek a statewide election recount in Ohio.

Unlike Florida in 2000, Ohio's recount rules are straightforward and specific. Once the Ohio vote is certified, which I'm told could happen as early as next week, the Green/Libertarian group will have five days to file a formal application for statewide recount. In addition, the group must then deposit $10 for every precinct to be recounted.

Based on the number of precincts in Ohio, a statewide recount will cost the Green/Libertarian group about $110,000. However, the group expects to raise that money "rather easily" within the next few days.

Once the recount application has been filed, the recount itself must begin within 10 days. So, expect to see the formal recount kick-off in early December.

21. 4th post of a troll?
Whether or not Kerry threw the race, I'll continue to vote democratic. But I think it's possible he threw the race, I'm disappointed by how quickly he conceded after promising to count every vote.

I live in NYC, and it seems like the Republicans have won control of the city and state government running against weak democratic candidates who ran to lose.

The answer is to get directly involved in the democratic party at the local level and push for change, support candidates who are willing to stand up against the status quo

22. Is Kerry too much part of the political establishment to rock the boat?
Is the DNC leaning on him?

Dennis Kucinich seems to be more concerned than Kerry about the
possible fraud, and it doesn't even affect him.

At the very least, Kerry should be jumping up and shouting about
paperless voting, because it's clearly so undemocratic. If he's
not prepared to make a fuss when there are so many unhappy voters
out there, perhaps he wasn't the right man for the job after all.

this would be top of the news every single night and the only thing on the cable news programs, there would be no end to the coverage. We all know that is the reality of the situation. I think they know it too. Anybody who dismisses this and says this should not be investigated for the sake of our democracy can kiss my lilly white ass and that includes anybody in the Democratic party!
