Equipment counted straight-party Dem votes as Libertarian
BROOKVILLE, Ind. - Election equipment counted straight-party votes for Democratic candidates as Libertarian votes, an error that could affect election outcomes in as many as nine counties, the Richmond Palladium-Item reported today.

Democrats discovered the error in Franklin County, where ballots will be counted again tonight.

The county's election equipment vendor, Fidlar, notified officials Wednesday of the error.

Libertarian candidates received 7 to 8 percent of the votes in Franklin County, which is about 30 miles south of Richmond.

12. Well, for one... if the net Kerry gain in Indiana is 135,000 votes...
... or some large percentage of that number, it should certainly open some eyes to the fact that a similar -- possibly yet to be uncovered -- problem in Ohio could flip the entire election.

At a minimum, it should help with election reforms prior to the next cycle.

27. first question in my mind: Baron Hill (congressional dist 9)
this is what the article said:

Fidlar has optical scan machines in nine Indiana counties, including two in the 9th Congressional District, where Democrat Baron Hill was narrowly defeated.

Flashpohler said Fidlar officials have said Franklin County is the only county where a database error occurred.

Rather speculative (there were machines in the district) but not specific as to whether the errors that have been detected were in the ninth district where the results were a surprise to many.

31. Defies the law of averages, doesn't it. I used to go to a grocery store
-- it was just a little corner shop -- that used to always get the price per pound wrong for my fruits and vegetables.

Guess what? NOT ONCE was it an error in my favor. I used to never buy more things than I could remeber the prices of, and would always correct them every time they got it wrong. After a while I thought they'd realize that I was always correcting them and would start charging me the right price. The frequency of error never changed. (Which was once per visit.) So I stopped shopping there.

But, man. If they just didn't no the prices of the stuff they sold, they would have undercharged me as often as they overcharged me.

33. The issue of supermarket prices was studied several years ago,
and they do over-charge much more often than they undercharge.

When there is a sale, they post the lower-price at the shelves right away.

When they raise prices, they take their time in marking it on the shelves.

35. Similar problems in Texas
Edited on Thu Nov-11-04 09:58 PM by thethinker
I heard a lady call in to a local radio station here in Texas on election day. She said she voted on touch screen and voted a straight Democratic ticket. When the machine showed who she voted for, it included DeLay, who is republican. She brought it to the attention of the poll workers and they tried it and it did the same thing again. She said she reported it to the Morrison headquarters (who was running against DeLay).

I have a feeling all kind of games were being played inside those machines every time anyone voted a straight Democratic ticket.

38. There were two purposes to the vote heist, this demonstrates the second
Purpose One - Obviously to win the electoral college, thus the greater variance between exit polls and the "final count" in these battleground states.

Purpose Two - To put chimp's popular vote a few points over 50%, so that the election was less likely to be contested, on the assumption that the advantage in the popular vote conferred legitimacy anyway. Thus, the odd inflating of chimp's vote (and/or deflating of Kerry's vote) in states where the race wasn't expected to be close.

smaller states might be unable to generate the 110K without arousing suspicion, but you can bet that Texas and lots of other states cheerfully made up the difference..

53. More of the same
The common thread in all of these programming/vote machine failure stories is a company spokesperson who says there is absolutely, positively, with 100% certitude, no reason to suspect that this error impacted vote counts with other machines in other areas.

A snafu here, missed and missing votes there... Nothing to worry about... Go see America's great destinations... Continue to practice your love of women...

If this were an infectious disease popping up here, in Ohio, in New Mexico, in Florida, the CDC would be going ape-shit. There needs to be an accounting of all the machines, of all the programs. Something went seriously wrong on Nov. 2 and we deserve some answers.

54. glitch? GLITCH??? LMAO. If they can get it right in India, why can't we?
I am so disgusted with our voting system. I saw a report on voting in India. Even they have a better, secure, and cheaper election system. They have e-voting:

Electronic Voting Is More Efficient in India

http://www.computerworld.com/news/2004/story/0,11280,96315,00.html

"OCTOBER 04, 2004 (COMPUTERWORLD) - As an Indian, I was mildly amused by the article "Effort Afoot to Address E-voting at Convention" .
As you may be aware, India has just had an election in which all votes were cast using electronic voting machines (EVM).

The election was hailed by everyone as being free and fair, and voting went off smoothly, with hardly a glitch in the equipment. The effectiveness and efficiency of EVMs was clearly apparent, since the results could be announced much faster and administration was also easier."

I guess it is best for Republicans to keep our system as unreliable as it is. This way nobody will notice a little bit of turning Democrats' votes into votes for Republicans here and there. Just enough to keep the WH, Congress, and Senate in their hands.

What a coincidence!

When things go well for Republicans it's a coincidence or a left wing conspiracy theory according to the media. But Bill Clinton had to be investigated for everything he did when he was 19 years old by that same media who know kisses Bush's ass ever single day. :(

From the article:

Republican Chairman Bob Jewell said he has concerns about the procedures used when the error was discovered.
............

All those finding election fraud and errors will be dealt with accordingly. Guantanamo?

This much is clear: These neofascists are ruthless bastards.
