Hispanics Applaud Gonzales Nomination
Hispanics Applaud Gonzales Nomination
But Some Civil Rights Leaders Express Concern

By Darryl Fears
Washington Post Staff Writer
Friday, November 12, 2004; Page A02

Hispanic civil rights and advocacy organizations yesterday hailed President Bush's nomination of White House counsel Alberto R. Gonzales as attorney general, which put the Texas Republican on track to become the nation's most powerful Hispanic public official.

But while some embraced the nomination as a big step toward wider acceptance of Hispanics, others joined People for the American Way and the American Civil Liberties Union in calling for thorough hearings on Gonzales's role in shaping anti-terrorism policies that led, they said, to the abuse of detainees at the Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq.

6. I heard on TV today that this guy got Junior off jury duty in Texas
when he was governor. It turns out, Gonzales pleaded for * not to be seated as a juror while governor...on a DUI trial...because...*cough*...Junior might have had to eventually review a pardon for said defendant-if he were to be convicted.

Actually, what was really going on...is Gonzales was protecting Junior from potential disclosure (bad press) about his own DUI in Maine during the time he was considering running for president.

Gonzalez nomination, or perhaps people like Columba Bush might applaud the Gonzalez nomination ... and perhaps people like bernadette pardo and ileana ros-lehtinen and the diaz-balart brothers, and perhaps those hispanic bushistas in miami ... but, there are sooooooooooo maaaaaaaaaaany ooooooooooooother hiiiiiiiiispanics whooooooooo doooooooooo noooooooot support either bush or his latest goon the gonzalez boy... now, why would the washington post be wanting you to believe that HISPANICS all, applaud the latest appointment/nomination of the bush boy? there must be a madness to their method.

11. What a crock
The named organizations are "League of United Latin American Citizens" this is pretty much a Texas centered org. What's funny is their National director is a very not Hispanic "Brent A. Wilkes" you have to see his picture.
http://www.lulac.org/About/Wilkes.html
I'm sure this British ancestried, and Ivy League educated guy knows about the average Hispanic Americans concern, much like Bush does.

The other is "National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials" and obviously their main perspective is to get more Latinos in office, so their not going to be critical.

The other Hispanic organizations all said in essence, It's nice that this position was given to a Hispanic, but were not sure Gonzales is the best Hispanic for the job.

12. Please dont shit on LULAC...
While myself I've never really been involved with the LULAC they are pretty much the oldest and most well respected Hispanic Civil Rights organization, about on par with what the NAACP is for Blacks.

So what of the guy you linked? There was a guy that I used to work with that I always assumed that he was "white," light skin color, blonde hair, his last name was Ortega.

Also lets assume this Wilkes guy is not hispanic at all so what of it? Are you going to imply that LULAC should be a racist organization and only hire Hispanics?

Thats a pretty bigoted of you.

13. All that's missing from Brent A. Wilkes's photo is a bowtie.
Good grief! Brent A. Wilkes, you say.....

You could have knocked me over with a feather. Have heard about LULAC for years, would never have connected that organization to someone like Brent A. Wilkes. Getting curiouser and curiouser.

Has George W. Bush EVER made a worthwhile choice yet, a choice genuinely good for the country?

15. The truth about Hispanic Organization
Unfortunately organizations LULAC and National La Council of La Raza publicly HAVE to support people like Gonzales because it is in their by-laws. Since these type of organizations are nonpartisan, their by-laws state that they are suppose to support Hispanics of both parties. However, off the record, they are much opposed to him considering his record as attorney and judge. When I got the new release from the the National Council of La Raza, it really did not say much, it was kind of like a forced acknowledgment.
